Anybody see the movie "Elizabethtown?" That's my hometown!
Exterior scenes with many local people as extras was filmed locally but most of the film was actually shot in Versailles and Lexington, KY. Cameron Crowe's father had a connection to Etown/Hardin County - Fort Knox, maybe, not sure. It is our own little claim to fame for a few brief moments.

Of course, the film has been pretty much panned but that's okay. Hell, the Courier-Journal's (the state's largest newspaper) own film critic, an Elizabethtown native, really didn't like the film although she did say it was "sweet." We are finally on somebody's map besides a stopping off point for food and a motel when traveling I-65. We had a big time premier of the director's cut with some of the movie execs (Crowe?, Bloom? I'm not sure) last month. Had another premier last night on the courthouse square for the big release. This is really big news for this neck of the woods. Think I'll wait for the DVD - apparently it won't be long.

It is funny how excited the whole town is about this movie - especially since I'm in the heart of a red state love fest with Chimpy, the GOP, church and guns as a mantra and a universal dislike of anything liberal and "Hollywoody." I'm surprised Crowe and Bloom weren't rode out of town on a rail for bringing that "Hollywood Communist" beliefs to our fair city. They are that bad.

1. Great for Elizabethtown!

I particularly liked this quote of yours, and I have to plead guilty: "We are finally on somebody's map besides a stopping off point for food and a motel when traveling I-65."

I have stayed there many a time. It does have the distinction, for me at least, of being right about where I need to stop when traveling from Michigan to Alabama. :-)

edit: wrong tense

2. It is funny isn't it?
Same thing happens here. Deep Red, hates the liberal Hollywood types but when they come to film it is really BIG news and everyone turns out. Even for Martin Sheen! We rarely get any real attention, mostly they are made for TV movies and not always very good but once they hit town it is a big deal.

I have not seen it. A little curious about it (I like Orlando Bloom) but not enough to fork over the money. I will think of you when it comes on TV eventually.

7. Funny you should mention Martin Sheen.
He occasionally turns up for mass at the local Catholic church here in my neck of the Southern California woods. Lots of well-to-do repukes go there. Anyhow, when it comes time for the "sign of peace handshake" these country club types are falling all over themselves and reaching across several rows for the opportunity to shake his hand. Star power transcends politics.

8. When he was here
you would have thought that God had come down for a visit. Sheesh.

It was exciting for me because I have always liked him and of course I like his politics. My kids were little but knew who he was once I introduced him as Emilio's dad. He thought that was pretty funny. Nice guy.

4. Yes, it is located here. How on earth did you know that?
I always thought it was just one of many storage facilities for the company. Not too well known here in town except a good place to buy pianos cheap.

5. Saw it yesterday--with my 11 year old Orlando Bloom fan-- I
thought it was odd, the writing felt unfinished-she thought it was really good--especially compared to the tripe they serve up to 11 year olds these days.

Congrats to your town.
