Syra's Intel Network in Mideast Jeopardized
NICOSIA -- Syria's vast intelligence network in the Middle East could be jeopardized by a United Nations investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Western intelligence sources said the UN investigation headed by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis has sought to interrogate the chiefs of Syria's intelligence community. They said the interrogation could uncover Syria's vast network of insurgency and sleeper cells in such countries as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Kuwait, the Palestinian Authority and Saudi Arabia.

On Oct. 12, Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kanaan, a major target of the Mehlis investigation, committed suicide in Damascus. Kanaan, 63, headed Syria's military intelligence network in Lebanon from 1982 to 2002 and was said to have been one of the highest-ranking intelligence officers in the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Assad has denied any role in the death of Kanaan.

"If I was a CIA officer, I would certainly have the name Kanaan in my Rolodex," Joshua Landis, editor of Syria Comment, told an audience at the American University in Beirut on Thursday.

1. Ghazi Kanaan committed suicide?
That was "convenient".

3. Perhaps he did really commit suicide:
Colette Khoury: Kanaan told me he was planning to commit suicide

Al Hayat, a privately owned pan-Arab newspaper, wrote on October 14 that writer Colette Khoury revealed to the newspaper that Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kanaan told her many times that he was planning to commit suicide.

The newspaper reported that Khoury said that Kanaan mentioned his intention to commit suicide “in the presence of a number of leaders, including former Information Minister Mohammed Salman and former Popular Army Chief General Mohammed Ibrahim al-Ali.” The paper added: “Khoury said yesterday that when she told that suicide was a cowardly act, the late general replied that committing suicide was a courageous move when it involved one’s dignity.” - Al Hayat, United Kingdom

2. Blah blah blah blah ....
Working really hard to spook Syria right now.

Babbling "diplomats", press fearmongering, border provocations,
and so on. I'm guessing the Harari investigation is coming
up dry, so an effort is being made to bluff little Assad.

Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 02:22 PM by Tom Yossarian Joad
WTF is it doing here (in GD)? It's not opinion, not regional... It didn't even have anything to do with tasers...

I can't ask the mover because I don't know who it was.

Per rules:

1. Do not post opinion pieces, editorials, or other stories that are not news.

2. Do not post news that is more than 12 hours old.

3. Do not post duplicate topics about news events that have already been posted. Please note that we are very strict about duplicates in the Latest Breaking News forum. Multiple discussion threads about the same topic are not permitted. If you would like to share a new article about a news item that is already being discussed, please add it to the thread that is already open on that topic.

4. When posting articles, always use the published title of the article as the title of the discussion thread. Additional information may be included in a thread title (in parentheses) if it helps to make the title more clear.

5. Whenever possible, post excerpts and links from reputable mainstream news sources that are available online. Do not link to blogs, vanity sites, or blatantly biased sources, except in cases where reputable mainstream sources are not available. Please make an effort to link directly to the original source of an article, instead of linking to sites that have re-published someone else's content, or re-packaged someone else's content as their own. The moderators have the authority to decide which websites are appropriate for posting in the Latest Breaking News forum and which are not.

6. Do not post links to polls, petitions, or other action items.

7. Discussion of Israeli/Palestinian issues is not permitted in the Latest Breaking News forum, and instead must be posted in the Israeli/Palestinian Affairs forum. If, however, the news item is primarily about U.S. policy in Israeli/Palestinian affairs, you may post it in the Latest Breaking News forum.

8. Do not post frivolous or off-topic news stories. The moderators of the Latest Breaking News forum have the authority to act as news editors, and may remove news stories that they do not consider appropriate for this forum.

9. All of our other rules for posting apply as well, including copyright rules.

Other than that, the mods are great.
