2. I would not put too much stock in what organizers are saying

Million Man March organizers said there were 1.5-2 million people there, and an independent estimated that number at 870,000 +/- 20%.

And Washington Post says that the number of attendees is less than at the march 10 years ago, even though now women/children were also welcome.

And even though the crowd was not as large as the hundreds of thousands at the Million Man March a decade ago, or as the Promise Keepers who gathered five years ago, black leaders at the event said the success of the day cannot be measured by numbers.

That said, I do not even know why people here are so much in favor of the Millions More Movement. Certainly people like Louis Farrakkkan and Malik Shabbazz need to be ostracised like the racists that they are, not embraced by the mainstream.

And, I absolutely, positively plead guilty to putting the 1.8 million figure in the title of the thread to attract attention - I've been posting about the importance of this event (and others have too) for several weeks and all DU seems to do collectively is YAWN - :-(

person of Farrakhan. He is the one who claims that white people were created by black genetic engineers 6000 years ago. He also praised Hitler.

Is he really the kind of person you think liberals should be rallying behind?

Also - I listened to what he had to say today - and he is a WHOLE LOT more sane than * . I cringed on only one statement: that Western education has failed - he did not elaborate and so I don't know what type of educational system he was advocating - if he is advocating religious education for all, I disagree.

FINALLY - he was ONE speaker - there were lots of others. Today's event was important, worth reading about/viewing so that you are informed, whether or not you agree.

12. I think the question is now in the air about whether

donating to the Katrina fund at the MMM site is 'supporting Nation of Islam'. I was almost moved to log onto MMM and give to them to help fund people who want to organize health care and education and so forth. If I really understood who I was giving to, I would. For right now - ACORN is the grassroots organizing group that gets my funds to fight for social justice.

7. How can you so easily discount...

whatever number marched on the Capitol this day? Whether it was 1.8 million or two million or 870,000 people, they actually went there and raised their voices to TRUTH in our country today. They took action to demonstrate to the "mainstream" what is actually possible if we unite against the outrageousness of the idiots in Washington! It's high time the true racism in this country is shown for exactly what it is! If this rally of 1.8 million opens the eyes and invigorates all the millions of others to get off their asses and hit the streets and protest to change that racism, I say, All Power to Them!
