You load sixteen tons . . . what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store - by: Merle Travis

1. Brother, can you spare a dime?
They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob.
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear,
I was always there, right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead --
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

4. I Was Raised On That Song
When I was a kid Tennessee Ernie Ford had a version of it on the air and it was dearly loved in our household. Once you've shoveled that first ton of coal all the rest look pretty much the same. You do 16 of them a day, day in and day out, and pretty soon you're dead.

7. I love that song too
I remember the Tennessee Ernie Ford version. I also have a version by the a capella group Rockapella on CD and love it too.

My dad's family are all from West Virginia. His father was a coal miner and I think that's why that song means alot to me.
