Minutmen Forced Out Of Vermont Town - Get Lost Trying To Find Canada
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 10:33 AM by matcom

<snip>

NEWPORT, Vt. -- It's hard to save the United States from illegal immigrants when you can't find the border.

At noon yesterday, some volunteers in the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps were in this bucolic town in northern Vermont, trying to do both.

Eleven members of this citizens group had come to the Vermont-Canada border to patrol for illegal immigrants. They had intended to station themselves in Derby Line, a quaint village that straddles the border.

But these Minutemen were forced out of town by a larger crowd of protesters, who denounced their opposition to illegal immigration as a front for racism.

So the volunteers set off to watch a stretch of border on a bike path that runs along Lake Memphremagog.

Only they got lost.

Some of the men stood at a break in the path, which is crossed by the Canadian border close to where they stood. But the group's leader, Bob Casimiro of Weymouth, Mass., was not sure which way to send them.

He pointed down the path toward a footbridge. The Minutemen started walking.

''Stay within sight," he told them. Within minutes, they were out of sight.

4. Translation for non-Yankees
(Minute man Casimiro of Weymouth, Mass...)

Local comment:
''They are outsiders, and we don't want them here," said David Van Deusen of Moretown, Vt., who helped to organize the protest. ''We don't want their racist policies in Vermont."

Translation: "Massholes, go home !" }(

14. Leaf-peeping Minutemen
''This is really nice," said Weymouth police officer Bob Johnson. ''We get a foliage tour thrown in for no extra cost."
Well, I would suspect the US/Canada border MUST be patrolled. After all, we don't want to be forced to eat le fromage et pane avec le vin rouge.

38. These days it's more likely that Americans will be trying to sneak into
Canada. The private militia in Sinclair Lewis's book It Can't Happen Here that kept people from doing that was called.......the Minutemen! Eerie.

From the Toronto Star

Minutemen border on invisible
U.S. `vigilantes' fizzle out in rain

MARTIN PATRIQUIN
SPECIAL TO THE STAR

"It's kind of stupid that they'd come here," he said. "I mean, what are they doing up there? They'd be lucky if they see a moose."

Wardle was one of about 30 or so rain-soaked activists who staged a protest in this quaint American border town about 170 kilometres southeast of Montreal. The Americans and their Canadian compatriots across the way, in the equally quaint town of Stanstead, Que., brought banners, noise-makers and their fair share of righteous anger to this sleepy crossing, in hopes of confronting the Minutemen, a group they consider racist and above the law.

So they went ahead and protested anyway, with a raucous march to the border, where they met up with the Canadians. They sang the same cheers, waved to one another and even staged an impromptu game of cross-border soccer over the Tomifobia River Bridge dividing the two countries — which went well, until a Vermont state trooper confiscated the ball.

The only place to find them, it seems, is at the gas station 200 metres from the protest site. It is where A. Robert Casimiro, a wiry 67-year-old Minuteman, has come to get coffee and find a decent map of the area — if only to figure out where, exactly, the border is. Some of the Minutemen were in the forest, he said, but most were watching the bicycle path outside of town — the one that goes over the border.

Casimiro patrolled Arizona last summer. "It's like night and day," he says of the two borders. "In Arizona you know there's a border there. There's five rows of razor wire. Here, we don't know where the border is. It would be embarrassing for us to go over the border and not know it. Then we would be illegal."
