Abraham Lincoln and US Grant were anti-war America haters !
Regarding the Mexican War:

US Grant (who fought as a Lieutenant in the war) - "one of the most unjust ever fought by a stronger against a weaker nation."

- Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, 2 vols. (New York, 1885),I,53

Abe Lincoln - as a Whig Congressman from Illinois, introduced resolutions in Congress "calling for information about the exact spot where Mexicans had shed American blood to start the war." Lincoln and the Whigs believed the reasons given for war were exaggerations and lies (which history has shown they were). Sound familiar?

- CG, 30 Cong., 1 Sess.., 64, 95, and Appendix, 93-95.

All of this can be found in Battle Cry Of Freedom, James M. McPherson, 1988, Oxford University Press.

2. Grant also said, though:
"Experience proves that the man who obstructs a war in which his nation is engaged, no matter whether right or wrong, occupies no enviable place in life or history. Better for him, individually, to advocate 'war, pestilence, and famine,' than to act as obstructionist to a war already begun."

5. Hello NYCL ! Can you tell me when Grant said that?
Was it during the war ?

The quote I gave was from his later days, from his memoirs, after he had had time to reflect on everything. Is your quote from his memoirs also? That would reduce my opinion of Grant, if so.

I'll be reading Grant's memoirs after Battle Cry. I'm really catching up on my Civil War reading. I have lots of books on my shelves to impress visitors, and now I'm actually reading them! :)

I have not read his memiors start to finish, but I have read some excerpts here and there. I live in New York about 20 minutes away from Grant's Tomb and I haven't even been! So much to do...LOL :hi:

3. The Mexican-American war is proof of Amerika's legacy
we have been doing immoral foreign policy actions for a long time before Iraq. Somehow the righteous mythology of WWII has blinded us to our history
