I'm listening to the BBC, and they're talking about ordinary Pakistanis buying up all the blankets, tents, and other supplies they can find, loading up trucks, and driving to the earthquake zone to provide disaster relief with their own hands. They're describing the unprecedented national outpouring of generosity.
"The whole country has risen to help their friends and colleagues and countrymen."
"They know that the government is weak and cannot provide this aid, so they are taking the initiative on their own
."
This strikes me as very similar to the stories of Americans stepping up to help Katrina victims. I wonder if there's a deeper significance to the similarity.
Edit: now they're talking about the anger at the government.
"We don't need much, just a tent, and the government, particularly the soldiers should provide it."
"For the first time, there is widespread criticism of Musharraf being beamed around the country."
