Huh...Dolly Parton on the Daily Show?
Do they just want people to skip the Daily Show and just turn into the Colbert Report?

1. What's wrong with Dolly Parton?
The Daily Show has lots of non-political celebrity guests. Why complain about Dolly?

7. I've grown to respect Ms. Parton...
While country is not my favorite music genere, I enjoy her live performances. Also found out recently that she donates one book a month to every child born in her home county in Tennesee. The donations continue until the kids graduate high school. The graduation and literacy rates have gone up a great deal since she started this program. She's a charitable person and very proud of her humble beginnings.

She teamed up with Governor Bredesen (a democrat and not DLC either!) for their pre-k program he started. From the time the program started every year until the child turns five they recieve a free book. Bredesen is really big on pre-k education. You can find out more at http://www.tennessee.gov

Here she is with our governor:

Dear Whitney, it is not about how HARD and LOUD you sing. Ewwwwww. Give us all a break.

Please listen to a recording of Ms. Parton singing her own song, and GET A CLUE. Dolly really knows how to sing, and she elevates her own song to the realm of Real Music.

Loud (intense, really) worked well for Whitney's "He Fills me Up" (is that the title?) there was something going on there. Her spirit seemed transcendent, and the clip I saved when she sang it on SNL still gives me chills. IMHO.

Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 02:51 PM by SoCalDem
She was all over the place giving interviews about how payola-like consolidation meant that the people who ARE country music were not getting air time, and the cross-over pop stars were.. Lots of the "older" country music stars backed her up on her mini-crusade..

I don't like country, but for a long time it was a genre that was loyal to it's founders and no matter how old they got, they were still revered..

Dolly is still working to try & get respect for the older C&W people..

http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=20019

<Taking sides in a cultural battle, some of the nation's top artists -- including Mandy Moore, the Dixie Chicks and Dolly Parton -- have contributed to a CD that benefits the nation's largest homosexual activist organization.

All of the proceeds from the CD, "Love Rocks," will go to the Human Rights Campaign -- a homosexual activist organization that has figured prominently in the push to legalize same-sex "marriage" nationwide and works to promote "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights." >

Being a Northern woman, I have always adored Dolly! She is smart, sweet, authentic, and very talented. Her honesty and truth shine through her.

I don't know if you watched, but she was promoting an album of cover songs. She even got Cat Stevens to collaborate with her.

She seems to have deliberately done this album at this time for a reason. Check out the songs she performs.

Those Were The Days

1. Those Were The Days (w/ Mary Hopkin and The Opry Gang)
2. Blowin In The Wind (w/ Nickel Creek)

58. Sounds like a fine album!
Unlike some here, I DO like country music. I remember watching her on the Porter Waggoner show. And Porter is COUNTRY! She wrote "I Will Always Love You" when she left the partnership--it was not a romance but they were close.

She's a fine songwriter & has a lovely voice. Graham Norton (the gay Irish talk show host) devoted a Christmas show to her; they visited Dollywood.

I didn't catch the Daily Show but will watch the rerun for sure.

59. I am sure that the interview will be up to view at ComedyCentral.com
within a day or so. Just go to The Daily Show, and then check for interview videos!

The first version I heard of I Will Always Love You was done by Whitney Houston and I was floored when I heard that Dolly wrote it. It might be sappy by some standards, but having known great love and having lost it (he died), it decimates me every time I hear it.

64. think i will have to get this one
i don't own any dolly albums, out of the bazillion that she has made (seriously, it is in the hundreds), and i think this would be a good one to pick up.
i am happy to see so many people umping to her defense. she is probably the most amazing person ever, if you ask me. she is about 1,000 times smarter that her image.
as far as her politics, she has common sense, and the most genuine respect for poor. common people ever. more than many of them have for themselves, i'd wager. she'd make a great congressman.

80. I wish she WOULD go ahead with "Dolly Does Dylan"
Sounds like a great idea to me. She's a decent, generous person who got to where she is with a lot of hard work -- and without being greedy and mean-spirited. She represents the "old America" to me ... not like those spoiled, shallow types who pretend to be patriotic.

84. Thanks for reminding me to pick that up!
I was just thinking that I needed a new CD, and had forgotten that this one sounded great. I remember reading about it a few months ago. I'm gonna go get it tonight--can't wait!

77. Dolly's all right, she says straight up she's not political and her...

"Dolly does Dylan" line alone was worth it watching Stewart crack up, it took him off guard and that's hard to do, i think she's funny :D Colbert's gig was all right, but he needs to find his proper gear = funny (we knew it was going to be funny) but didn't seem as fluid as Daily Show imo
