I Don't Like Wilma's Path...
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 04:19 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
It looks like it's going to make a direct hit on the Naples/Marco Island area then cut across the southern part of Florida and exit to the Atlantic Ocean via Ft. Lauderdale...

1. Is it unusual for a storm like this to come up from the south and head...
...north and east? I thought they always came out of the east and headed west and north.

2. It is in October.
Steering currents drive them that way.

6. Cold front dropping south
It is forecast to turn Wilma and drive her NE or ENE directly across the southern Florida peninsula late this weekend. Interestingly Wilma is forecast to be moving arount 25 MPH at that time, which is very quick for a hurricane. This means that she would lose little strength passing from the west coast to the east and the entire peninsula would feel virtually her full strength along her path of passage.

The cold front forecast to turn Wilma eastward is also forecast to bring near record cold for this time of year to parts of the southeast. It's going to be an interesting weekend weatherwise for everyone down here.

7. Here's the historical plot for October hurricanes.
Here's a historic map, showing October hurricanes 1851-2003.

8. Don't forget Jeanne last year. Was east of FL and did a 270 degree
turn just to hit us and give us the award of the most hurricanes for one state in a year.
