Very Interesting: Did Powell just give us a clue?
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 11:13 AM by jsamuel
He said "the name 'Plame' was never in the memo." Some have seen this as spin because the memo said "Valorie Wilson," however, if we are looking at this in prosecutor mode, this gives us an avenue to discover the trail of information. Who then got the name "Plame" instead? Why would they use "Plame" instead of Wilson? Why did Novak report "Plame" and not Wilson? Why did Judy have "Flame" written down?

It is a way to track the trail of leaks and a way of getting to motive. If they wanted to take out Joe Wilson, they could have just said Ms. Wilson, but they didn't.

Someone had to go looking for "Plame". They didn't just let "Ms Wilson" slip out. Do you see what I am getting at?

They said "Plame", her undercover name. I think it could show deliberate action.

1. Judy wrote "Flame" for one of two reasons.
1. IMHO, she was deliberately covering up, just in case things went awry in the future

2. She was thinking to herself, "Man, this is hot," and wrote "Flame" as a sort of Freudian slip.

6. I suppose it depends on who is saying "Plame"
But seems to me that someone who hears an unusual last name like Flame would ask for clarification, considering the sensitivity of the information and all that.

JMHO, I think it was a preemptive coverup on her part to misspell Ms. Plame's name.

8. no, reporters ask to have names spelled
seriously, even the worst reporters have names spelled for them. Flame was no accident.

there is a significant amount of evidence against that right now

32. yes, but no
seriously, asking for proper spelling of names is more basic for reporters than carrying a "reporter's notebook." The fact that she carried a reporter's notebook automatically puts her higher up on the reporter's basics ladder than a simple misspelling.

Flame was deliberate. I'd bet money on it and I don't have money to lose.

They WANT people to think it was a simple mistake. They don't want anyone to know that they were commonly discussing burning Plame.

11. The point is, they didn't say Wilson.
She used "Plame" with her contacts/undercover work and Wilson in her private life, apparently.

15. I can play too!
Flame also sounds a lot like Blame. Deep inside, he conscience was trying to tell her that she was in too deep, that she too would be one having to face a lot of BLAME, and that in the life to come, maybe even the FLAME...

he was the one being misheard, whereas Plame sounded like Flame. ;-)

10. I think they didn't say her name so they could say they didn't say her nam
It was all about plausible deniability. Spelling? I'm getting no help on the spelling.

Anyway, they didn't "really" say her name. That's all they want to say.

Though saying she was the wife of Mr Wilson most certainly identified her. It gave her one and only one identity; he can only BE married to one person at a time, and there would have been a limit to how many former wives he might have had, if any, if there were previous wives and they weren't sure which one. How many could there have been, and how many current wives? One. Would the law fail to identify her as Ms Wilson? No. It is her legal right to be called so, she can assume his name at any time. The name change was all about deniability.

They didn't say her name...so they could say...we didn't say her name, see?

As for the "Flame" name? Judith is an idiot, that's all. Or, maybe just average. I can see myself doing the same thing, can't you? It sounds like flame, even looks like flame, easy mistake.

17. Then that would mean that Plame didn't come from the memo
aboard AF1. It must have come from the letter that was given to Grossman before a meeting at the White House to discuss Wilson. The letter went to Grossman because Powell and Armitage were out of the country.

21. No, that isn't right, It could and probably did come from the memo
at least her identity, but the actual name "Plame" didn't. So someone had to research her and find out her undercover name was "Plame".

24. Yes but didn't the digging on Wilson start in May 03?
Why go looking for another name other than Wilson. My suspicions are that somebody already knew that, someone that was not on the plane.

"Plame" didn't come from the memo, so it came from someone who knew that she used "Plame" as her undercover name.

29. "Research" may not have been necessary
The memo may not have used her actual name, but her position (She was working for the Agency on WMD issues). This memo was State Dept, right?

Then was there a person in the State Dept that was working on WMD issues, and thus have contact with the CIA's WMD group, AND was close to Rove, Libby, et al? Yes there was; his name is John Bolton.

Bolton may have know Plame via their common work and simply put a name to a position for his buddies.

18. The "Flame", "Valorie" business is incredibly juvenile, junior high school
crap. Most likely so they could have "plausible deniability", just like that whole inane stupidity with Rove, and "I didn't reveal her NAME" just the fact that she was Joe Wilson's wife.

If they can get away with that, and we'll see, then there really is no justice left in this country.

28. A Mind Screw to defeat a polygraph?
Don't say Wilson. Don't say Plame. Instead, say Flame. That way, if asked, you can say in all truth you never said her name. You can swear, up and down, left and right, all day long, nope, never said her name. The polygraph detects your reaction to your thoughts. If you convince yourself the question is about what words you used, rather than the meaning, you're home free.

You can also say so with greater authority when asked without polygraphs. Sound bites, statements under oath, etc. all come off sounding more sure if you've framed the question correctly in your head.

That's why I try my hardest to be totally honest. I can't handle the self mind f*cking required to lie convincingly.

Valorie "Flame" and "Victoria" Wilson.---I am beginning to think this "newly discovered" notebook was also newly written. But, perhaps I just need some tinfoil on my head.

23. You are correct.
Colin isn't taking the blame for this one. And the "Plame-name-game" -- intended to hide the leakers' tracks -- allows a good investigator to focus on the source of the leaks.
