Baltimore Reportedly Target of Latest Terror ThreatCity Officials Close Tunnels as Security Precaution

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18, 2005 — The government has received a general threat regarding a possible terrorist attack involving tunnels along the I-95 corridor in the Baltimore area, ABC News has learned.

The security threat prompted Maryland Transportation Authority police to close and divert traffic away from Baltimore's McHenry and Harbor tunnels.

Information about a potential attack, ABC News has learned, came from a previously reliable source two or three days ago. The city of Baltimore is in the process of taking some additional security precautions, while the federal government is analyzing the credibility of the threat.

The Department of Homeland Security, as well as Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, may provide statements later today.

There've been an increasing number of these phoney "terror threats" in the last couple of weeks. Four or five now, I believe- and they started just about the time that indictments were expected to come down, and the media actually started talking about it.

Nobody thinks a story like this would trump the indictment story once they're *issued*, but they obviously divert media coverage away from *anticipating indictments*. It is on your screen, is it not?

"Anticipating indictment" stories are just masturbation by the press. One talking head guessing and another guessing back. If those stories predict indictments and there aren't any indictments, it looks like a big win for the administration. If they predict indictments and indictments do come, the predictions don't add anything to the story...its the indictments themselves that are the story.

I don't recall the news being "all about indictments" before the terra alert...

And, by the way, no..I don't think it has anything to do with Fitz commuting. Others in this thread seemed to think that closing the tunnel was some supreme act of disruption that would prevent travel between Baltimore and DC (see e.g. post 36)...that's what I was responding to...
