How are Sept. 24th protesters feeling physically?
According to Salon's article on Tularemia today,

the incubation period for Tularemia is 5 to 14 days. If anyone contracted Tularemia at the protest, they should be feeling really lousy by now.

39. A blast from the past--Aum Shinrikyo
Before their chemical assault on the subway, they had worked for years on biological assault plans, even sending people to visit labs in the Soviet Union. They went back to chemicals after every single attempt at broadcasting germs failed. Tularemia needs less bacteria to cause a serious infection than many other species, but it is still pretty hard to scatter enough in a mob to actually infect people.

So far, biological attacks are most likely to be directed at individuals (like the anthrax attacks), and not at crowds.

Those biosensors are notoriously hair-trigger. As I recall, there are even several harmless organisms that cause a false positive for things like Tularemia.

Sore throat, swollen neck, and pink eye! Definitely a strange set of symptoms. The thing is, I just had this last week--a bit past the incubation period. Also, I seem to have recovered. It's a mystery! :tinfoilhat:

24. WOULD YOU F-ING BELIEVE WE STILL DON'T HAVE THE RESULTS OF MY SON'S BLOOD
TEST?

Sorry to scream, but the media announce the possible exposure on Fri Sept 30th, my son became sick on Sunday. On Monday I took him to the pediatrician (October 3rd) and alerted him to the possible exposure. He had a Tularemia blood serum taken at Childrens' Hospital in Columbus, OH. I called the following day for results and was told by the Dr that the results were not back, but that the Hospital had told him that only "conspiracy theorist " sites were spreading these rumors and so they weren't concerned. I told him that it was in the WaPo and on DC nbc and abc affliates. He told me he was just the messenger.

I have called repeatedly but the results are still not back. I sent a letter to the CDC and this was the response I received back:

Thank you for your inquiry to CDC-INFO. In response to your request for information on recent reports of tularemia in Washington, D.C., we are pleased to provide you with the following relevant information.

State and local officials, along with the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are investigating the source of indications of low levels of a bacterium (germ) that causes tularemia in Washington, D.C. There is nothing to indicate an intentional release of the organism but the investigation is continuing to see if a naturally occurring explanation for the sensor detection can be identified.

The positive indications were found in BioWatch collectors near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on September 24 and 25, 2005. Since then, additional tests from these collectors have all been negative. Public health officials do not believe the finding of low levels of the bacterium near the National Mall represents a public health threat. Tularemia is found naturally in the environment, and health officials are doing additional environmental sampling as well as reviewing other possible causes of the positive reading.

As a precaution, CDC and public health officials are alerting the medical community to be on the lookout for possible cases of Tularemia. No cases of tularemia have been discovered or reported to date.

Although tularemia can have serious health effects, including pneumonia; it is treatable with antibiotics. Tularemia is not known to spread from person to person. CDC and public health officials are recommending that anyone who visited areas around the National Mall between 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24 and 10 a.m. Sunday, September 25 see a health care provider IF they experience symptoms related to tularemia, which include:
Sudden fever
Chills
Headaches
Muscle aches
Joint pain
Dry cough
Conjunctivitis
Pneumonia

Treatment with antibiotics for a period of 10-14 days or more after exposure may be recommended. If you are given antibiotics, it is important to take them according to the instructions you receive. All of the medication you are given must be taken.

People who traveled near the National Mall during this time do NOT need to seek out medical attention if they do not develop symptoms of tularemia.

More information about tularemia is available on the CDC web site at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/submenus/sub_tularemia.htm

Thank you for contacting the CDC-INFO Contact Center. Please do not hesitate to call 1-800-CDC-INFO, e-mail cdcinfo@cdc.gov, or visit www.cdc.gov if you have any additional questions.

CDC-INFO is a service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

My son is better but my husband and I are still fighting congestion. I am very angry at the handling of this. If this was a serious outbreak the handling would have resulted in another D of HS disaster!

25. Strange thing happened tonight
I took my son to be tested for strep throat, and decided to have someone check me as well. Explained that I haven't felt well for a few weeks, off and on sore throat, small sore in mouth, tightness in chest, low grade fever, with these symptoms increasing and subsiding daily. I hadn't thought much about the symptoms being related to tuleremia, as the 14 days were expired and because I didn't get real sick, just mildly.

The Doctor said normally you would run a high fever with inhalation pneumonia from tuleremia, but that because my symptoms began prior to the expiration of the 14 days, it couldn't be ruled out.

He did a throat culture and suspects I may have pneumonia and requested I follow up with my family Doctor. Why he didn't do an X-ray or blood test is beyond me. I don't want to alarm anyone, but this did surprise me.

I also believe that with all the allergies to pollens, my illness is more than likely related to a seasonal allergy disorder instead of any biological weapon. I will not have the results of the culture for a few days.

I did have an interesting question occur to me after the Doctors discussed this with me. Maybe someone with medical knowledge would have an answer - would the inhalation type of tulermia leave traces on our clothes?

They decided my son has a virus causing his sore throat and will be fine. He did not attend the march.

40. I've been waiting to see the results of sons test b4 I went to doctor. I
am a firm believer in not abusing antibiotics (my husband had a near death experience with strep A necrotizing fascitis (aka flesh eating bacteria). I want antibiotics to work if we desperately need them. I guess I'll make an appointment.

31. My oldest son got ill the next day (Sunday)
he was at the mall and concert till midnight with his girlfriend. He got cold symptoms; fever, runny nose, cough and sore throat. It was me, my three children, my sons girlfriend and my friend and his 2 sons.

Then I got ill (same symptoms as my son) within three days and detected a swollen lymph node behind my ear -- highly unusual, it is smaller now but I can still feel it. It was painful on the Wednesday after the march. My middle son got the "cold" by Friday after the March. No one else got sick here.

What should I do? we all seem better.

Nothing serious, though, cleared up within a few days.

I usually get a cold during the fall or spring anyway, when the temperature shifts from warm to cold, or from cold to warm. Guess that's my body's way of adjusting and preparing itself for the season.
