Dick Cheney
Additions welcome. Historical background- Financial ties- All of the crooks and cronies he is and has been involved with through the years- Expose them. It might take a few days.

One of the most shifty, serpentine, corrupt bastards on the planet.

Vice President Dick Cheney

FITZGERALD FOCUSING ON DIRECT CHENEY INVOLVEMENT: Bloomberg reported, “A special counsel is focusing on whether Vice President Dick Cheney played a role in leaking a covert CIA agent’s name, according to people familiar with the probe that already threatens top White House aides Karl Rove and Lewis Libby.”

CHENEY INTERVIEWED BY FEDERAL PROSECUTORS: “Vice President Dick Cheney was recently interviewed by federal prosecutors who asked whether he knew of anyone at the White House who had improperly disclosed the identity of an undercover C.I.A. officer. Mr. Cheney was also asked about conversations with senior aides, including his chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby . In addition, those people said, Mr. Cheney was asked whether he knew of any concerted effort by White House aides to name the officer. It was not clear how Mr. Cheney responded to the prosecutors’ questions. was not questioned under oath and he has not been asked to appear before the grand jury.”

CHENEY SEEMS TO BE THE COMMON DENOMINATOR: Four members of the Vice President’s staff — “Scooter” Libby, John Hannah, Mary Matalin, and Catherine Martin — have either been implicated in the leak or testified before the grand jury. In addition, Stephen Hadley worked under Cheney at the Defense Department and is considered by some to be his “eyes and ears” on the NSC staff.

CHENEY AND LIBBY PRESSURED CIA ON URANIUM: Cheney and Libby visited the CIA headquarters to engage the CIA analysts directly on this issue of uranium acquisition in Africa, “creating an environment in which some analysts felt they were being pressured to make their assessments fit with the Bush administration’s policy objectives.”

Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 09:33 PM by Walt Starr
He nominated Walt Starr to both the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1980.

Walt Starr repaid him for this honor by never voting for him for any political office ever in his entire voting life.

9. The next thing we need
is to investigate the funding for the two primary think tanks. Are they getting totally private money--and how long has it been coming in--and if not totally private, then what government "grants" or "contracts" are involved. Why, is L. Ch*ney a fellow at AEI? This totally blows my mind.

11. Funding for AEI- $29,653,933 from the following sources
Edited on Wed Oct-19-05 10:09 PM by callady

Between 1985 and 2001, AEI received $29,653,933 from the following funding sources:
? Carthage Foundation
? Castle Rock Foundation
? Earhart Foundation
? John M. Olin Foundation, Inc.
? Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation
? Philip M. McKenna Foundation, Inc.
? Scaife Foundations (Scaife Family, Sarah Mellon Scaife, Carthage)
? Smith Richardson Foundation

Amounts contributed by the Coors Foundation are not included.

Funding has come from many other sources, such as Amoco, the Kraft Foundation, and the Procter & Gamble Fund. AEI, unlike some think tanks, has no endowment - something which has led the organization into financial embarrassment in 1985 when its operating budget outstripped its donations by 25 percent (Newsweek, 1984).

Corporate donations are not public, but it is known that During 1997, Philip Morris contributed $100,000 to the Institute <8>; and during 2002, ExxonMobil contributed $200,000 <9>.
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=American_Enterprise_Institute#Funding

Lynne Cheney has been a member of the American Enterprise Institute since at least October 1998. She is currently a senior fellow at the Institute.<1>

On October 13, 1998, Secretary of Defense William Sebastian Cohen "announced the formation and first meeting of the National Security Study Group" that was headed by former Senators David Boren and Warren Bruce Rudman and otherwise known as the Boren-Rudman Commission. Lynne Cheney was invited to become a member of the Group.<2>

Cheney is the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney. Between 1994 and 2001 she was a member of the Board of of Directors of the Lockheed-Martin Group. <3> <4>

Review.

Dick Cheney Has Long Planned To Loot Iraqi Oil

by Scott Thompson

As this week's Feature highlights, Vice President Dick Cheney has been
plotting the conquest of Iraq since he was Secretary of Defense in President
George H.W. Bush's Administration—a plan then considered insane aggression.
Moreover, on July 17, 2003, Judicial Watch announced that Cheney's Energy
Task Force had developed a map of Iraq dated March 2001, as well as maps of
the neighboring United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) and Saudi Arabia, which show
that Cheney knew precisely how much the conquest of Iraq would be worth.

The map, which shows oilfields, pipelines, tanker terminals, and refineries,
includes eight "blocks" for exploration near the border with Saudi Arabia.
Iraq has been proven to have the second-highest amount of oil reserves of
any nation in the world, next to Saudi Arabia. And, this is without
exploration of the eight blocks near the Saudi border—a vast area that is at
least one-third of the country—which could make Iraq number one in terms of
proven reserves. Alphabetically, from Japan to Vietnam, there is attached to
the map a list of "Foreign Suitors" for oil deals with Saddam Hussein's
Iraq—deals that the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) has indicated are
now off.

A Pipe Dream?

Before returning to the significance of the maps for lining Vice President
Cheney's pockets: EIR has learned that the the U.S. Export-Import Bank is
circulating a plan that calls for securitizing future oil revenues from Iraq
in order to pay for reconstruction contracts. What is known about this from
the Ex-Im Bank plan, and from a July 13 article in the Observer of London,
entitled "Outrage at U.S. Plan To Mortgage Iraqi Oil," is that the Ex-Im
Bank is proposing to raise loans from private banks to pay for
reconstruction contracts, to be repaid by revenues from future Iraqi oil
sales. It is argued that this would take pressure off the deficit-ridden
U.S. budget to pay reconstruction costs.

The Ex-Im Bank has been working on behalf of the corporate lobbying group
known as the Coalition for Employment Through Exports, among whose most
important participants are Halliburton Oil Co. and Bechtel.

10. Halliburton Shares Fall to $18.61-Halliburton Shares Rise to $66/Share
Halliburton falls on SEC probe

Change of accounting procedure done under Cheney leadership may have added millions to revenue.
May 29, 2002: 3:49 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Shares of Halliburton fell Wednesday after the company said the Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating an accounting practice introduced at the company at the time it was run by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Shares of Halliburton (HAL: down $0.74 to $18.61, Research, Estimates) were off about 4 percent in early afternoon trading.

The oil field drilling company said after the market close Tuesday that the investigation apparently involves a change in the way it accounted for contracts after a merger with Dresser Industries. Cheney served as CEO of Halliburton from 1995 until he was named to the Republican national ticket in July 2000.

After the 1998 merger the company began recognizing as revenue and accounts receivable the amount of money it expected to be collectible from customers for changes or cost overruns that occurred during the course of completing contracts. Details of the change in accounting procedures at Halliburton were highlighted in an article in the New York Times last week. The Halliburton statement said it believes the article prompted the probe.

In 1 year, Halliburton's stock doubles as troop deaths double
20 Sept. 2005

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (HalliburtonWatch.org) -- Since the beginning of the Iraq war, Halliburton, the Texas energy giant once headed by Vice President Dick Cheney, has seen its stock price more than triple in value. When the U.S invaded Iraq in March of 2003, Halliburton's stock was selling for $20 per share. The stock price at the close of market activity on Monday was $66.

In the last 12 months, the total number of U.S. service members killed in Iraq almost doubled as Halliburton's stock doubled. Halliburton's stock rose from $33 per share in September 2004 to $66 yesterday while U.S. deaths in Iraq increased from 1,061 to almost 1900.

Cheney's Halliburton stock options rose 3,281% last year, senator finds

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) asserts that Cheney's options -- worth $241,498 a year ago -- are now valued at more than $8 million. The former CEO of the oil and gas services juggernaut, Cheney has pledged to give proceeds to charity.

14. Dick Cheney one of the most Conservative Politicians of the Modern Era
Despite his reputation as a moderate, Dick Cheney is in reality one of the most conservative political figures of the modern era of American politics. During his Congressional career as Wyoming's member of the House of Representatives in the 1980s, Cheney's conservative votes included staunch support for aid to the Contras, opposition to abortion even in cases of rape or incest, and opposition to common sense gun safety measures such as a ban on "cop killer" bullets.

His record as a moderate stems largely from his tenure as George Bush's Secretary of Defense, when he presided over significant cutbacks in US troops and opposed several unnecessary weapons programs. But as Lawrence J. Korb of the Council on Foreign Relations has pointed out, Cheney's image as a "budget cutter" is vastly overrated. Clearly, the defense industry has harbored no grudges; his wife has served for years on the board of Lockheed Martin (for which service she is compensated $120,000 a year).

26. Lynne Cheney author of steamy Western Sex Novel of Lesbian Love-It's True
Sisters - A Book By Lynne Cheney

If you look around hard enough on the Web you find some humorous stuff. Everyone knows that our Vice President, Dick Cheney, has a lesbian daughter, Mary, about whom he rarely speaks openly even though the poor girl has to work for his re-election committee. But did you know that Dick’s wife Lynne, wrote a sizzling western novel called “Sisters” which is filled with hot, steamy stuff like lesbian love, prostitution and rape, and supports a sweeping pro-feminist agenda?

Some excerpts:

The women who embraced in the wagon were Adam and Eve crossing a dark cathedral stage -- no, Eve and Eve, loving one another as they would not be able to once they ate of the fruit and knew themselves as they truly were. She felt curiously moved, curiously envious of them. She had never to this moment thought Eden a particularly attractive paradise, based as it was on naiveté, but she saw that the women in the cart had a passionate, loving intimacy forever closed to her. How strong it made them. What comfort it gave.

The young woman was heavily powdered, but quite attractive, a curvesome creature, rounded at bosom and cheek. When she smiled, even her teeth seemed puffed and rounded, like tiny ivory pillows.

Let us go away together, away from the anger and imperatives of men. We shall find ourselves a secluded bower where they dare not venture. There will be only the two of us, and we shall linger through long afternoons of sweet retirement. In the evenings I shall read to you while you work your cross-stitch in the firelight. And then we shall go to bed, our bed, my dearest girl.

15. Energy Task Force Contributors
Other contributors involved in meetings with the Energy Task Force members
include: Bechtel, which gave a total of $645,640, of which $469,690 went to
Republicans and $176,950 to Democrats; and, Halliburton, which had a total
of $480,188 in contributions, of which $463,288 went to Republicans and
$15,900 to Democrats. While these contributions appear to be perfectly
legal, it is likely—as the keys to the maps and subsequent developments
contracts in Iraq with Bechtel and Halliburton show—that there was
influence-peddling involved. In fact, the Vice President knows his deferred
payments depend on performance. So, not only did he plan the invasion of
Iraq when he was Defense Secretary, but through his Energy Task Force, he
appears to have tried to calculate, to the penny, what war would bring for
himself and his corporate cronies.

22. Lawsuit seeks to uncover secret Energy Group meetings
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 10:47 AM by Marie26
On June 24, in Cheney v. U.S. District Court, the Supreme Court gave Vice President Dick Cheney only a partial victory in the suit that seeks to learn how his National Energy Policy Development Group developed its recommendations. The plaintiffs in the suit suspect that -- and want to find out whether -- there was extensive involvement and improper influence by private industry in what was supposed to be a government group. They note that the Group's recommendations had a decidedly pro-energy slant.

Cheney wanted the suit to be dismissed. Instead, the court sent the case back to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit for further adjudication.

The core issue in this case is whether the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972 (FACA) applies to the National Energy Policy Development Group. If so, then the Group's proceedings must be revealed. Cheney's position is that FACA does not apply, by its own terms, since the president appointed only federal officials to serve on the panel.

But the plaintiffs in the case -- Judicial Watch and the Sierra Club -- argue that in fact, it's not true that only federal officials served on the panel. To the contrary, they say, a number of energy industry lobbyists (such as Enron's Ken Lay) were so deeply involved in the work of the Group, they were effectively members. And the D.C. Circuit ruled in 1993, in Association of Physicians & Surgeons v. Clinton, that in such a situation, FACA does apply....

The plaintiffs had served discovery requests -- principally requests for documents, and written interrogatories - on Cheney. Cheney refused to respond. He also refused to invoke executive privilege. Thus, were it not for his decision to seek Supreme Court review, he would have had to either invoke executive privilege, or produce documents and respond to the interrogatories. On this issue, the Supreme Court sided with Cheney...

The D.C. Circuit has also noted, in one of the few FACA cases, that "he very reason that presidential communications deserve special protection, namely the President's unique powers and profound responsibilities, is simultaneously the very reason why securing as much public knowledge of presidential action as is consistent with the needs of governing is of paramount importance."

In short, it is not clear what will happen -- and much depends on what the D.C. Circuit does. Still, I remain hopeful that the underlying lawsuits in Cheney v. District Court will open the records of the National Energy Policy Development Group.

That is the right result legally and constitutionally -- and the right outcome for our democracy. We deserve to know if private interests are unduly influencing purportedly governmental bodies."

24. The Curse of Dick Cheney
A fellow DUer, Dora, posted a link to this excellent article from August 2004, I'll cull a few snippets for this thread.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/_/id/6450422?rnd=1129823981343&has-player=true&version=6.0.12.1040

<snip>

Should George W. Bush win this election, it will give him the distinction of being the first occupant of the White House to have survived naming Dick Cheney to a post in his administration. The Cheney jinx first manifested itself at the presidential level back in 1969, when Richard Nixon appointed him to his first job in the executive branch. It surfaced again in 1975, when Gerald Ford made Cheney his chief of staff and then -- with Cheney's help -- lost the 1976 election. George H.W. Bush, having named Cheney secretary of defense, was defeated for re-election in 1992. The ever-canny Ronald Reagan was the only Republican president since Eisenhower who managed to serve two full terms. He is also the only one not to have appointed Dick Cheney to office.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Cheney's manner and authority of voice far outstrip his true abilities," says Chas Freeman, who served under Bush's father as ambassador to Saudi Arabia. "It was clear from the start that Bush required adult supervision -- but it turns out Cheney has even worse instincts. He does not understand that when you act recklessly, your mistakes will come back and bite you on the ass."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheney's record of mistakes begins in 1959, when Tom Stroock, a Republican politician-businessman in Casper, Wyoming, got Cheney, then a senior at Natrona County High School, a scholarship to Yale. "Dick was the all-American boy, in the top ten percent of his class," Stroock says. "He seemed a natural." But instead of triumphing, Cheney failed. "He spent his time partying with guys who loved football but weren't varsity quality," recalls Stephen Billings, an Episcopalian minister who roomed with him during Cheney's freshman (and only full) year at Yale. "His idea was, you didn't need to master the material," says his other roommate, Jacob Plotkin. "He passed one psych course without attending class or studying, and he was proud of that. But there are some things you can't bluff, and Dick reached a point where you couldn't recover."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Having turned (President) Ford into their instrument, Rumsfeld and Cheney staged a palace coup. They pushed Ford to fire Defense Secretary James Schlesinger, tell Vice President Nelson Rockefeller to look for another job and remove Henry Kissinger from his post as national security adviser. Rumsfeld was named secretary of defense, and Cheney became chief of staff to the president. The Yale dropout and draft dodger was, at the age of thirty-four, the second-most-powerful man in the White House.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is my son in 2002 when Invisible Dick came to town, dashing for cash.

29. Dick Cheney's Covert Action
Despite repeated attempts by the Italian intelligence service to help us cook the books, the senior CIA intelligence analysts resisted the administration’s effort to sell the bogus notion that Iraq was trying to buy uranium in Niger. Even in the much-maligned October 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, the entire intelligence community remained split on the reliability of the Iraq/Niger claim. During briefings subsequent to the publication of the NIE, senior CIA officials repeatedly debunked the claim that Iraq was trying to buy uranium. They also dismissed as unreliable reports from Great Britain, which also were derived from the faulty Italian intelligence reports.

It is now clear that Italy’s intelligence service, SISME, had a hand in producing the forged documents delivered to the U.S. Embassy in Rome in early October 2003 that purported to show a deal with Niger to buy uranium. Many in the intelligence community are convinced that a prominent neocon with longstanding ties to SISME played a role in the forgery. The truth of that proposition remains to be proven. This much is certain: Either SISME or someone with ties to SISME helped forge and circulate those documents, which some tried to use to bolster the case to go to war with Iraq.

28. More of the obvious Cheney Corruption- Where's Congress?

Dick Cheney, $35 million, Halliburton and corruption
6/1/2005 11:45:00 AM  GMT

No one's ever seriously questioned Vice President Dick Cheney's ethics when he was chief executive of Halliburton, the very same oil-field services company that's currently embroiled in a scandal with the Pentagon due to its questionable accounting practices related to its work in war-torn Iraq.

It's a strange phenomenon that Cheney hasn't been put on the docks especially when there are reams of documents in the public domain showing how Cheney cooked the books when he was CEO of Halliburton
