There was a whole bunch of anti-gay graffiti scrawled all over my school

To begin with, my school's Gay-straight alliance had celebrated 'Coming Out' day last Tuesday. The night before, they had written stuff in chalk all over the sidewalks (they had permission).

A week passes, and today I return after the schools' fall break to find these hateful messages such as these written all over campus:

Homosexuality is Immoral"

"Boycott Gay Rights"

"Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

and various homophobic illustrations of stick figures.

What the fuck right do they have to complain to me? Adam and Eve? What the FUCK? You're in college. STOP BELIEVING IN FAIRY TAILS!

And hey, homosexuality's immoral? But hate speech isn't?

I have one thing to say to these mother fuckers:

FUCK YOU. I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND I AM FUCKING GLAD FOR THAT. FUCKING BIGOTS LIKE YOU ARE LEECHES, YES, LEECHES ON US GOOD PEOPLE. YOU ARE THE PEOPLE KNOWN AS 'BUZZKILLERS'. WHEN YOU GET TO THE PARTY, EVERYONE ELSE LEAVES.

At first I wanted to write a few things over them (Change Boycott Gay Rights to Boycott Stupidity: Support Gay Rights).

But that isn't the right thing to do.

I don't think that any group was given permission to do this. I wholeheartedly believe that these idiots have the right to say whatever the fuck they want, but I don't think that vandalism is included in the first amendment.

11. I'm in Northern Kentucky.

Most people on campus, especially the professors, don't seem to have a problem with homosexuality. It's pretty much an attitude of 'as long as I'm not involved, I don't care.'

But I did see an interesting message in the bathroom:

"Oppose Special Rights for gays (but not basic rights)"

WTF? Marriage isn't a basic right?

I think that these people just hate gays, like KKK members hate blacks. But I don't see that many anti gay people.

Although, I remember last Tuesday I saw a gay guy talking to two girls about how he doesn't like all the over the top, in your face stuff us gays do.

I understand where he's coming from, but I wanted to point out to him that people like him and me would still get beaten up for having a lisp if it wasn't for people like that.

Maybe this might help you. I work and live in a very conservative area (Calgary downtown). Where I work, there is a high school across the street. Every spring, the art students there have free rein on the sidewalks (with the chalk). Their art is beautiful! 5 to 6 city blocks of art on the sidewalk. Can you even imagine? Anyway. I have seen CEOs, lawyers and other 3 piece suiters step around the art work on the sidewalk, stop and look and comment. No one wrecks the artwork; no one scuffs across the chalk drawings. No one vandalises the artwork of these young people. Even the crack heads (there is a crack park across from the high school) respect the art. Now, I ask you, how hard was that? Everyone should enjoy art and freedom of expression. Again, I am telling you... this is one of the MOST conservative areas in Canada.

Point is: the graffiti may not represent more than a tiny percentile in your community. My experience is that most heteros don't care much about, and don't think much about gay people.

Our society is torn over this matter. As we learn more of our nature we uncover more forms of injustice that we have perpetrated. We strive to right these things as we discover them.

But the trouble is that not all people are on the same page in this process. Many have beleifs that contain fixed notions of right and wrong. They resist the forward progress of our society.

As society progresses the distance between its understanding of right and wrong becomes increasingly removed from these fixed beliefs. In time it can become unbearable for those that truly believe. They find their society becoming corrupt and evil.

And that is the thing of it. They truly believe such things are evil. Their sense of loss is so great they have given up on the social contract and have decided to take power as they can. They see no alternative other than to try to force their beliefs on others.

It is cultural war.

... when there are a lot of "gay issues" in the news. The publicity about Coming Out Day no doubt made these dim Neanderthals think it might be a good idea to paint anti-gay slogons. Traditionally, June (Gay Pride Month) and October (Gay History Month/Coming Out Day) have the highest incidents of hate crimes.

In the best of all possible worlds, the university would denounce the perpetrators and make efforts to find and prosecute them. I truly hope the university administration will take some steps toward addressing this.

for a red state school. Nonetheless, I don't expect much action on their part. They'll just give out the usual 'it's a travesty' line and get on with their lives.

At the very least, they probably will want to document what happened for their own files. In fact, it could be a good issue for them to send out to their members to let them know what's going on in other parts of the state.

Call the press. If you get no response from your local press, take the next step. Try the advocate- they're always looking for short stories from the states. People need to know that this is happening.

Graffiti alone may appear to be "just vandalism." Unfortunately, it is SO much bigger than that. It hurts a lot of people, from the closeted professor to the high school seniors looking at the school for next year to the out activists on campus.

And worst: Graffiti is just one step in a process... it's usually not the final product. If the hate isn't brought to light, it will fester quietly, unspoken, amongst the population of a city, town, or even university community.
