Fuck South Park.,Trey Parker and Matt Stone
Ive been a fan of South Park since day one.I havent always agreed with their politics but their humour almost always won me over.

Its amazing that they could come up with a show like "Thats my Bush" and then turn around and give a pass to almost everything this administration has done since taking office. Its like someone got to them, blackmailed them.

When Clinton was in office they were merciless, but a fascist like Bush has been pretty much given carte blanche.

Tonight's episode tried to whitewash Fema and Bush's incompetence during Katrina.

Its depressing,I used to look forward to the latest episode of south park but I cant anymore. These guys are carrying water for these bastards.

40. Even some of the rw journalists
are writing that it's bush's culpa!

"From 9/11 hero to people's zero"
PHILLIP ADAMS ( Murdoch columnist)

October 18, 2005

snip~

"It took that natural phenomenon to reveal what the US public had been so reluctant to admit: that their President is a disaster heading an abysmal administration. He's going, going, gone with the wind, even worse off than before September 11, 2001, when the voters were realising they'd elected a dud, when the administration was turning on itself. For example, the word was out - via White House leaks - that Rumsfeld was for the chop. When poor Donald was forced to read the names of likely replacements, he said he'd need a Pearl Harbor to save him. Osama bin Laden obliged."

148. What a disappointment, thanks for sparing us the first-hand experience
I appreciate hearing about that, because that must have been a terribly disappointing show to watch, and not a pleasurable experience. I'm glad I didn't have to watch it myself, thank you.

What a bunch of jerks to have allowed a show like that, one that even slightly cast a positive light on this admin's actions. Shame on them.

I would have expected them to spoof the amazing denial, not participate in it.

All the money in the world can't fix THAT. Those jerks.

24. You haven't seen their views on undecided voters.
When a supposed comedic genius calls undecided voters "stupid" and basically thinks they should all be done away with, you have to question just what sort of views they try to push on the public. It is often unintentional but you should consider what their backgrounds are. I stopped watching the show because of how extreme they got.

108. I enjoyed them both, for awhile...
But "The Simpsons" has settled comfortably into middle age,
while "South Park" has gone downhill
faster than a B*shCabal™ federal budget!

Much like Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, and Tom Green,
Matt and Trey never really grasped
the secret to their own SUCCESS.
And, when the SUCCESS began to fade,
they began to grasp at STRAWS.

And so, their once-funny efforts have spiraled
downward into a series of oh-so-desperate attempts
to SHOCK someone.

I quit watching after they spliced the real film
into the "Mr. Garrison Sex-Change" episode.

A scalpel cutting into a human being-
WHO THE HELL found that to be "funny"?
Ted Bundy?
Jeff Dahmer?
Bill Frist?

Sorry to break this to ya, SouthPark fans,
but here it is:

The part of your brain
that thinks "South Park" is still FUNNY,
is the same part of the brain
that makes the Freepers think
that DUBYA is a fine PRESIDENT!

I'm sorry to be so harsh, but someone had to tell you!

I used to be a south park fan, but after Team America I turned my back. At the beginning it's making fun of the American Right's misunderstanding of foreign cultures. Then it apologizes for that and goes on to violently blow up and decapitate every liberal media figure without so much as a peep of criticism about RW media figures.

Fuck them. I'm over them. Every damn show contains a 'social message'-- but if you try to call them on it, they laugh it off. They've become pretty fuckin' cowardly.

There's a "lesson" in every episode, quite often with an ignorant, simplistic message.

They must watch CNN for at least five minutes a day.

And they're affecting people.

To go from portraying the president as an imbecile to ignoring everything he has done to ruin this country in the last 5 years tells me that someone got to them.

They make their living out of pointing out everything that is wrong with this country but somehow magically that last 5 years of this presidency has been overlooked.

104. I'd say it's pretty liberal
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 02:10 AM by fujiyama
THe creator is a liberal. SEth McFarlane's sister mentioned how their parents were very liberal and how it rubbed off on him. Also, remember McFarlane is also the creator of American Dad, which makes a lot of fun of the paranoid police state we live in.

It's best never to take these shows out of context. For example, with the Simpsons there were several episodes which made fun of Clinton when he was president. If one saw only those episodes, then they might reason that Groening and the other writers are really RW.

Instead the opposite is true.

I'm not sure about Parker and Stone. I take it they are libertarians. They certainly make fun of the religious right, but at the same time in their film they didn't devote any time to RW pundits getting killed, so I'd say they are pukes. It doesn't matter because SP isn't nearly as funny as the Simpsons, FAmily Guy, or American DAd though SP has its moments (Schiavo and The Passion episodes were funny).

Comedy often draws much of its edge from anger. Often times it is anger at the system. Sometimes it pokes at the other side's cow. Sometimes it pokes your cow. Don't put them on a pedestal and you won't be disappointed when they knock your cow over.

I saw pretty quickly the vein their humor came from and I did not see it as progressive or positive in any partiuclar way. They are discordians. A little discord is fun (hail Eris). But they have always been an opponent of the idea of people working together to do something better. Their core comedy is based on the libertarian ideal of minimal collective effort.

Those guys are scraping off one or two layers of irony and going with it. They're playing off of partisan politics on one level, but on the next level, they're navigating the area of average intelligence.

In one sense, they are saying, Don't you realize that this political reality is a joke? or Don't you realize that all that America has seen and absorbed since WWII is highly dramatized situations, whether it's on TV or on the news? No one knows the truth (all of it, anyway).

I hate them for being so deep. that's the bottom line. When I watched "Team America: World Police", I was kind of upset when it was over; I was waiting for them to make a statement of some sort .... but, their statement is: We're all crazy and there's no answer, so we're going to make fun of every bit of it from all sides of world-perception --- it doesn't matter if you're a fundamentalist, a hippie, a neo-con, or a woodsman.

Whatever ... they make me crazy. but, that's my humble take on their deal.

EDIT: I spelled "woodsman" wrong .... jeezuz.

I don't necessarily agree that the show has any significant power to influence opinions. But I definitely agree that they seem to bash the left almost exclusively. "Team America: World Police", with the exception of a few moments that genuinely made me laugh (like the "freedom isn't free...it costs a buck o'five" fake country song), really pissed me off. It definitely didn't seem like they were taking shots at everyone.

I've been a SP fan since about day one and even some of the episodes from last year were hilarious, but they piss me off a lot when they start talking politics. I didn't see the new one yet, but I'm going to catch the rerun when it starts in a couple minutes.

72. I still like South Park,
and I think Parker and Stone are pretty much equal-opportunity offenders. No one is safe when they get a bug up their ass.

I didn't care much for Team America: World Police when I first saw it, certainly not compared to the South Park movie, but on watching it again, I realized that it could easily be taken as a fairly subtle and more or less brutal satire of how right-wingers think. I love Michael Moore, and I have all of TV Nation and The Awful Truth on tape, but I still laughed when he exploded, because I know that's exactly the kind of thing that would gladden a black, shrunken FreepHeart. The joke is on RW people who see the movie as confirmation of their world-view, because with no discernible sense of humour, they're not capable of getting it.

I don't think it's plausible to go from the skewering they gave Spurious George in That's My Bush! and make a 180-degree turn overnight into Bush-worship. I do think they're just expressing their own agenda, as is a libertarians' wont, and not that of any political party. They have their own viewpoint. There are wacky, pompous, pretentious people in all parts of the political spectrum who need to be taken down a few pegs, and they're more than happy to oblige.

That's their job; it's what they do -- blast away indiscriminately in all directions. I know a lot of RWers who don't like South Park either, for reasons exactly opposite to yours. If Parker and Stone can offend you and them, then they're doing something right, and more power to them, says I.

Team America was so funny I really wanted it to be that way. But by the end, I realized that the whole movie existed to get back at Michael Moore for that beef they had with him.

They only take down liberals and fundies. They don't take down Bush and they are major apologists for corporate America in their show. Still, I do enjoy their humor on censorship and abortion.

It bashed the media and their fearmongering journalism more than anything else. I don't think it whitewashed the federal response to the flood at all. For me at least, it was evenhanded on who it mocked politically. Even though Stan tried to tell the truth at the end, the moronic citizens thought it was some sort of empowerment chant. South Park's citizens in general are known for being stupid.

I think nihilism is a cute little "look at me I'm all grown up and cynical" phase that's appropriate for a 17-year-old, but at some point it's time to grow up and realize that some things really do, in fact, matter.

The show is funny like a good knock-knock joke is funny. But I think they've jumped the shark in terms of social commentary.

146. Yeah, definitely they're a case of arrested development. Can be funny,
very funny; but only when they're dealing with the world from the bright-ten-year-old mindset that they're at. (ten year olds living in a basically comfortable and sheltered set-up, that is, who get most or all of their knowledge of the greater world from the media--which they do mock well). They don't do actual politics well; it's beyond them.

They still make me laugh sometimes; but they also seem really dated, a product of the 90's. Ironically, they also make me think of this song:

’cause I’m a 21st century digital boy,
I don’t know how to live but I’ve got a lot of toys,
My daddy’s a lazy middle class intellectual,
My mommy’s on valium, so ineffectual,
Ain’t life a mystery?

I can’t explain it, the things they’re saying to me,
It’s going yayayayayayaya, oh yeah...

At this point I mainly want to say them, in their own language:

"Dude. You really should turn off the TV and go outside sometime."

102. How can anyone take a cartoon this seriously?
I don't watch SP. It's not my brand of humor, but isn't this supposed to be a parody of sorts as well? Also, why take it this seriously? It's a cartoon.

I don't get it.

123. Bullcrap! They have said they hate liberals
In an interview with Salon.com, Parker and Stone said they hate politicians, but over all, they hate liberals. In so many words.

That interview with Salon.com, after the release of "Team America," was quite revealing about how these two pricks think. They surely came out as a pair of spoiled brats unable to empathize with anyone not doing as well as they are. It's a must read.

"Libertarian liberals"? Give me a freaking break. They are ALWAYS pushing right-wing talking points in their show, sometimes, like in last night's episode, in a very militant fashion. And they have never criticized Bush in "South Park," and Republicans ONLY once, by my count.

Remember goobacks? "They took our jobs!"

Note how they mock rethug talking points, by taking them to bizarre extremes?

Take Moore as a suicide bomber, what could be more satirical?

I think that the problem is that some folks don't get the message.

Moore as a suicide bomber was "satirical"? Maybe you should read a bit about the beef between Moore and the South Park pricks.

Putting Michael Moore as a suicide bomber in "Team America" was no cynical swipe to the right. Excuse me.

147. Yes, satire.
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 06:34 AM by ErisFiveFingers
Taking a vehement, public, anti-war, anti-violence figure, and making him pro-war, and pro-violence, is satire.

As far as the "beef" goes.... two words: Andy Kaufman.

Putting MM in TA was a cynical swipe towards the bizarre "with us or against us" mindset, that is, unless MM was pro war, he *must* be a terrorist.

Let's go over the first season of SP:
101: Alien Conspiracies
102: Orin Hatch's protection of "supplements" in spite of science.
103: Ignorance of endangered species, and geology
104: Gay bashing
105: Genetics science (stem cells, etc.)
106: Death
107: Pinkeye, and zombies
108: Damien, RW fear of "the devil"
109: Starvin Marvin: Lip-service diplomacy
110: Mr. Hankey: Christian idolotry
111: Tom's Rhinoplasty: Crushes, and feminity programming
112: Mecha Streisand: Mockery of big-monster thinking
113: Cartmans' mom is a dirty slut: mockery of 'single parenthood' demonization.

So, in one season alone, they mocked RW talking points about:
Supplements, Endangered species, the EPA, Science, Gay bashing, Genetics, Religious fear, Private (faith based?) Charity, the "sacredness" of Christmas idols, screwed up perceptions about femininity, fear-mongering monsters (bird flu terra alerts, anyone?), and the myth that single mothers are "bad" (every man in the town was implicated).

That being said, their humor is not for everyone. They don't carry water, so unless you want to see your own beliefs mocked, as well as the beliefs of others, don't watch it.

edit: typo, clarification

115. I agree, it was REVOLTING!
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 07:17 AM by Julius Civitatus
I quickly saw where they were going within minutes. At the same time they trashed people who live under "beaver dams," environmentalists, trashed the concept of global warming, and made it look as if criticizing FEMA was blaming Bush for natural disasters. Even more, it was nasty and disrespectful of the victims of Katrina, when they are still pulling dead bodies from the black lagoon that once was New Orleans.

The worst part of last night's episode is that IT WASN'T FUNNY.

In the past these two Republican pricks have touched topics in ways that I certainly didn't like, but at least they were funny. This episode wasn't funny at all. It was full of Republican talking points and snide remarks against the environmentally concerned. That's all. In order to find this episode funny, you would have to agree with their premises; I'm pretty sure that Jonah Goldberg and the rest of cheeto-eating pricks at NRO's The Corner probably found it hilarious.

And yes, fuck Trey Parker and Matt Stone! Pricks!

:grr:

their appeal is to those Republicans who don't admit to being Republicans. the ones who aren't very religiously conservative, but are the type to say "yeah, we are going to kick their asses".

i have come across a few of these types. they always insult and attack Democrats. but when you say something about a Republican they say something like "i'm not a Republican, i'm an independent" or "all politicians do it".

their whole thing is more of an attack on liberals rather than promoting right wing crap as Fox News does.

124. I've always loved South Park, but I have to admit...
last night's episode was a clunker. But even so, to have given so much attention to people stuck on roofs seems to me to be a back-handed indictment against FEMA and Bush.

Parker and Stone usually are brilliant, but every now and then, they create a piece of shit. Hopefully, the other episodes this season will be better. Given their uneven record, they are bound to have better episodes to come.

Regarding "giving Bush a pass", I don't think it was ever their job to create anything more than a funny cartoon. And I don't agree they really ever savaged Clinton as you seem to suggest, and I've been a fan since Day 1.

And to suggest that they are pro-Bush is ridiculous, as they created "That's My Bush!", which was clearly a commentary on how much a dufus Bush was and still is.

And also recall the "Kenny as Terry Schiavo" episode -- this one totally skewered Republicans.

I just think it's a good idea to use some perspective and get a sense of humor with regards to South Park. It's just a cartoon. Usually a laugh-riot, but sometimes it's crap.

The episode last night was not one of their best and I did not appreciate the fact that they blew off global warming. The point that we just need to help the people and worry about who to blame later, I think was not a terrible point. They were also mixing in "The Day After Tomorrow", so it's not a fair comparison to Katrina in many respects. That movie deserved to be gone after because it sucked. I'm not sure why they are not doing much with GW. There's a lot to go after there.

at panic stricken "chicken-little" types that think the "Day After Tomorrow" is legit.

at a media that overhypes everything and reports rumor as fact.

Newscaster: " Wow! You've actually seen people raping and looting?"

Correspondent: "No, we haven't actually seen it...we're just reporting it."

and

at a public that's more concerened with pointing fingers thatn with actually doing something.

155. Agreed
Then again, I've always thought "South Park" sucked. In a large part, because the characters annoyed the hell out of me; plus, I always thought it was pointlessly gross and, despite claims by many of its fans, I've always felt it had a right-wing slant. The creators seem to be the sort of asshole "we're cool 'cause we don't give a shit about anything" "libertarian"-types I knew in high school. Only these guys are in their thirties (I think) and should have grown out of this stage by now.

I think the "it's a cartoon" justification is a cop-out. Yes, "South Park" is a cartoon; yes, it's satire. So what? Can cartoons, sitcoms, and other fictional TV not communicate messages concerning real-life events? Do satirical messages not communicate a legitimate point of view? I think Parker and Stone are most definitely communicating their views through this cartoon, and I think their "everything is full of shit, let's make fun of all of it" is an awful message to send.

Plus, I've never seen how these guys are "equal opportunity" bashers, as is so often claimed. They seem to be in the same sense that "Hannity and Colmes" is a fair and balanced political commentary show. Just like on FAUX News shows you get about eight minutes of right-wing talking points for a couple of minutes of weak liberal rebuttal, on "South Park" you get to sit through aspect after aspect of the liberal agenda getting mocked for the occasional bashing of some religious right fundie.

And yeah, maybe I just don't have a sense of humor about some stuff, like "South Park"'s stupid-ass parody of the 2000 election, with the class election and the "recount after recount", calling in Jesse Jackson, etc., etc. garbage. If I had wanted to hear the Bush campaign talking points in the election aftermath I could always flip a few channels over and get them directly from fuckin' James Baker- I'd prefer they not be a part of my "entertainment", thank you very much.

But sure, to each his/her own. I definitely have my reasons for not watching "South Park" and I've stated them; others have theirs for watching it. I just don't think the fact that it's a satirical cartoon, as if this somehow makes it lacking in any true relevance or from influencing people, exempts it from criticism.
