I have always been troubled ... |
|
by the fact that Fitzgerald was appointed by James Comey, who reported to John Ashcroft.
So, just speculating here, as whacky as it may sound, what if it should turn out that Ashcroft really does have a conscience? Is it possible that he didn't return as AG because of this?

DU! Don't worry yourself; Ashcroft doesn't have a conscience, or if he does, that might explain many things.

3. Welcome to DU, Mme. Defarge. |

Ashcroft left because of this, but not because he has a conscience. Rats abandoning a ship don't necessarily have a conscience.

9. Ashcroft has a conscience. |
|
The problem is, I don't agree with anything he finds moral or just, and I don't agree with much he finds immoral. But he does have a conscience, and acts within it. And that is a difference between him and the rest of BushCo. He's also an extreme ideologue, so what he sees as good is often immoral to us.
Ashcroft, IIRC, recused himself from making a decision on the Plame case because he was too close to Rove. Thus, Comey chose. I don't know what input Ashcroft had on that, but the fact that he stepped back proves he at least understands integrity. Again, a major step ahead of BushCo. IF he recommended Fitzgerald, and Fitzgerald turns out to be the real deal, it speaks well of Ashcroft. Though I won't start a fan club.
