Bush shrugs off woes as 'background noise'

Washington - President George Bush, whose popularity has hit a new low, on Thursday shrugged off mounting political woes as mere "background noise" that will not stop him from doing his job.
At a White House news conference with visiting Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, Bush dismissed controversies raging about his latest nomination to the US Supreme Court and other issues.
"There's some background noise here, a lot of chatter, a lot of speculation and opining," the president told reporters in the Rose Garden. "The American people expect me to do my job and I'm going to."
Asked how he was coping with all the distractions, Bush said, "I just finished a very constructive dialogue with the president of the Palestinian authority, talking about how to achieve peace.
