DU's mexicopat & many 100s of thousands others are in deep trouble (Wilma)
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 06:12 PM by EuroObserver
Please don't forget them all just because it's not (yet) Florida or elsewhere in CONUS.

Please resist that US trend (we observe from the outside, aware of another probably on the order of 100,000 dead in what we used to call, I think, the Golden Triangle (ref: Kashmir/Pakistan)) towards extreme selfishness, to be generally unaware of what doesn't hit your TV screens, for whatever reasons, in the headlines... You are still the wealthiest and most powerful, one would also like to think among the most sympathetic, empathetic and reasonably well-educated people in the world... Praise and criticism be also due to Allah or whatever name you need to choose...

Ah, Jesus... See what's coming...

Jeff Masters: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html

<snip>

Wilma's impact on Mexico
Wilma's impact on Mexico is likely to be catastrophic. A 50-mile wide stretch of coast will receive Category 4 to 5 sustained winds of over 150 mph, causing incredible damage. As Wilma sits in place for two days, the long duration of high winds will cause far more damage than a quickly moving storm would. The long duration extreme winds will probably cause some of the worst wind damage ever seen in a hurricane. The storm surge will not be as much as a problem, because deep water just offshore will prevent a huge storm surge from piling up. Still, the expected storm surge of up to 11 feet will cause widespread damage to coastal structures. In adddition, rainfall amounts of 15 - 25 will cause serious flooding. Wilma is likely to be Mexico's worst weather disaster in history.

Stay safe Mexicopat and all others in the path of this devastating hurricane.

9. The sad thing is....
After listening to a CNN report on how well prepared Cuba is for massive hurricanes, they make us look like worse than the utter amateurs we are when it comes to self-sufficiency in the face of natural disasters. People don't die in Cuba from hurricanes, unlike here. (And this in one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere....)

I am so jealous of Cuba's ability to handle medical, environmental and weather disasters... we could learn so much if we'd just realize that a communist country is not automatically the font of all evil in the world.

I've been there. I have friends from there (ok, many of the cleverest get out, many come here to Spain).

What little (mainly, actually, thanks to the US embargo, thanks) they have is pretty equitably shared amongst all.

A fine people. Of sound heart and mind.

And really no sense of paranoia at all...

28. we are just above sea level here...
the island is only 5 miles long and about one half mile wide at the widest point...there may be points on the island that are perhaps 6 or 7 ft above sea level...there is a large shelf in the caribbean side of the water...so that may help with the surge, since there is not enough space for a large surge to form..that may help...may be only 11 or 12 foot surges...and as bad as that seems...it is a big thing when it comes to surges.

+ powerful winds and rain. Get yourself into the most solid, two or three-storey building you can find, and tie yourself very tight to something when the time comes.

You'll be ok. Look after others, later. I see you know how to be cool, stay calm.

Admirable, thanks Pat. Maintain/reestablish contact please. I'm now counselling my niece who also wants to remain on Grand Bahama, later...

waves way too big to try it. at this point, it would be more dangerous to try to get off the island than to ride it out. those of us that are here now..cannot get off. We already have high winds and rain...and huge waves in the water. Thank u all for caring. i am hopeful, of course, that i will be able to ride this out..my neighbors..although...i hate the thought of being with them..ha..they are everything we hate....died in the wool repugs...but..hey! Anyway..they do have a two story house...and i will go over and stay with them when it gets bad. i think i will be ok...i am afraid...but i really do think it will be ok. i will keep in touch as long as i can.

The only time I have been more than twenty miles beyond the borders of the United States was when my wife and I went with my parents on a four day getaway to Cozumel, Cancun and one day at Chichen Itza. It was one of the if not the single most enchanted and memorable few days of my life. Driving into the jungles to see the ruins, the quiet beaches of Cozumel, all the proud yet welcoming Mayan peoples of that area. My heart is aching.

We better fucking have our naval vessels still in the Gulf on stand by.
They helped us with Katrina, we better fuckig reciprocate.
