Great review on the "Colbert Report"
All the news that's fit to mock
*Comedy Central's 'The Colbert Report,' a spinoff of 'The Daily Show,' starts off delivering zingers.

By Paul Brownfield, L.A. Times Staff Writer

Words matter on "The Colbert Report," the new spinoff of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" starring former "Daily Show" correspondent Stephen Colbert.

The other night, for example, Colbert said he aims to speak in a "single authoritarian voice." As opposed, of course, to "authoritative" — that self-compliment the real TV news institutions throw around to promote their brands. "The Colbert Report," a comedy show, takes its language more seriously.

1. I really like the show. It's kind of smarter than the Daily Show.
In a way. Like, the highbrow Daily Show or something.

Last night wasn't great, but I think he just has to hit his stride.

3. He seems to feel he has to always be funny
The show would be better if he could calm down and be himself

7. He screwed up a few times with the teleprompter last night too...
I think he's nervous, because as you said, he feels the need to always be funny maybe.

I share your wish that he'd just relax... it's clear he's a very bright man, and the viewers won't turn the channel just because he's not popping a joke every single instant.

11. The man is doing a new script every day...he's actually acting so he's

under a tremendous amount of pressure to perform well. And he has to keep the aggressive attitude because he's doing "O'Reilly" in terms of the physical newperson he represents. You can see him relax, even in the "role" during the interview session, which is more off the cuff. He's jabbing at the media in general, but the focus of the character is still O'Reilly, so that persona is what he's working so hard to keep up.

I don't know how he can keep up the pace. It's a really intense half-hour, much different than the Daily Show. He's a one man band...he's doing incredibly well. Let's hope the material holds up.

12. Heavy on the verbal and lighter on the visual.
Colbert requires undivided attention to "get it" - not your average gamer's cuppa T.

2. Good for Stephen Colbert..
I miss him on the Daily Show, though.

I think it's funny the way they say "The Colbert Repoor"

4. His parodies
of other news shows...especially O'Lielly...are great but sort of subtle..you have to pay attention to get the joke.

9. Don't you worry about burnout? He does everything!
A correspondent or two could help lighten the load. My favorite so far is the promised spotlight on the 435 Congressional Districts. The interview with Georgia's Dist. 1 Rep. (name?, but a Republican) was hysterical. I loved the Fraternity bit and the look on the guy's face was priceless. I hope he has a few more of these in the can before the Reps. get wise and refuse to participate.
