Delay's lawyer and the mug shot
The first thing I saw on the news about DeLay's mug shot (great lighting, BTW) was his lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, showing it to the press complaining that Ronnie Earle had released it so DeLay's political opponents could use it against him.

Can this attorney just say anything he wants and get away with it?

I mean what possible connection would Ronnie Earle have with the Harris County sherriff's office?

This whole booking thing was between the District Judge and DeLay, not between Earle and DeLay.

I sure wish somebody would make more of how political and persecutorial DeLay and his attorney are vis-a-vis Ronnie Earle.

1. It's a freaking PUBLIC RECORD.
I'm starting to believe that they'll say any bullshit thing they want about Earle, because NOBODY EVER QUESTIONS THEM ON IT. Shameful.

2. He's got himself a Jeff Fieger type
who shoots his mouth off, tests the patience of the court until he is sanctioned by the judge. Then he might shut up. (And I don't dislike Fieger).

8. Might, might not. Depends on the judge.
Depending on level of guilt, he might not have much of a choice.

3. I think DeLay's lawyer
arranged it so the photo doesn't show the sign and doesn't include a profile.

5. I wondered about that
I've seen a bunch of mugshots but the one on the DU home page surprisingly doesn't have Tom holding the sign.

6. The damned thing looks like a congressional yearbook photo.

I'm not saying it should look like Nick Nolte's mug shot, but it shouldn't look so posed. These booking guys pride themselves in getting people at their worst moment.

16. I agree
This shows a disrespect of America and its laws. Put the pig in jail for Contempt. Then he can be as arrogant to laws as he wishes

13. I think they are realizing the smug grinning photo was a bad idea
It's obvious that the DeLay organization looked for the friendliest place to turn themselves in (where they wouldn't do the profile or the number). But on top of being accused of money laundering and criminal conspiracy, DeLay also is being "silently" accused of being an arrogant scofflaw a$$hole. This photograph is Exhibit A for that charge. It makes him look even more loathsome.

14. This is a long article by John Dean but certainly worth the read.
It talks about how Delay is screwing himself with his publicity stunts.

The Case Against Tom DeLay: What Has Happened To Grand Jury Secrecy In Texas?
By JOHN W. DEAN
----
Friday, Oct. 07, 2005

What is one to make of the criminal charges against Tom DeLay?

I spoke with several knowledgeable Texas lawyers, of both parties, about the case against DeLay; they were willing to speak, but only off-the-record. Or, as one put it, "Who in hell wants to get in the middle of a fight between a polecat and a skunk?"

(I don't like unidentified sources. But I will use them in this column, only because they are sharing nothing more their expertise, no inside information. They were offering their professional "speculation," if you will.)

There is no speculation, however, by the grand jurors who have spoken out in this case; they are familiar with the evidence prosecutors must have adduced, before them, to convince them to indict. And what they are saying appears dangerously close to breaking their oaths of secrecy.

The Charges Against DeLay

The (now) former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives was indicted on September 28, and again on October 2, by two different Travis County, Texas grand juries. The second indictment is far more serious than the first.
