Talk about a far-out theory !
I hope Fitzgerald is not thinking along these lines.. "collapse of governance"? He must be kidding?

<snip>
Americans all have to consider the implications now of a worst case scenario-- the problems of scandal and polarization result in a meltdown of the W. Administration and a collapse of governance in Washington. No Doubt some hard core partisans and ideologues would exult. But with the domestic and foreign policy challenges the country faces, it would be a disaster for all of us.

We are in the same boat, and if it is rudderless, we all sink. So how can we deal with the consequences if that worst case scenario occurs? Here is one simple three steop roadmap:

"Keep this roadmap in your back pocket for now. And remember, you heard it here first."

Like there's governance now?

On edit: Now that I actually read Norm Oldstein's blog I think Skinner is right. It's satire.

17. rudderless? operating on autopilot anyway...there is no
leadership. what is bush gonna do without his professional babysitters? Condi can't do the whole job-her shoes look great but her credibility is O. when the inner circle disintegrates, the president follows, in time (just like Nixon).

11. It is a pretty funny theory.
I agree that Fitzgerald is not going to do anything that lead to the resignation of either Bush or Cheney. I am confident that he would see their crimes as "political" crimes which should be addressed through the political process of impeachment.

12. poor thinking, poor metaphor
A rudder has no direct connection to sinking. If a ship is underway being rudderless it doesn't steer, but if the ship isn't underway the rudder doesn's matter anyway

Bush's ship has lost steam and isn't able to maintain steering anyway.

14. Big flaw in plan
Clinton can't be VP. No one who is not eligible to be president can be VP.

Otherwise, I kind of like it. I do agree that if it all hit the fan, and Bush and Cheney were both removed, it would be a major hit to foreign confidence in the nation. Our troops could face an encouraged enemy. Our markets could crumble. Etc.

I've been touting a similar plan for while. Cheney resigns, we appoint Al Gore. Bush resigns. Gore picks Kerry. I understand Repubs would not like this, so I'd let Gore pick McCain or the elder Bush instead. Bipartisan, proven leadership at the helm, and someone who won an election in the first place.

16. The ship may start to sink...
without control of the Middle East we will begin to lose control of Middle East oil and the dollar may begin its final plunge, but this was only a short-term solution in light of Peak Oil anyway. We need an aggressive program to develop alternative energy NOW. All the $100s of billions wasted on war should have been put into this!

I'll pitch in my 2 cents; I feel what your seeing is the Republican party , being fed up with neocons, funddies, an un- winnable war, debt, and future economic collapse are reigning in * in a way that they can retain their power. I say this because the democrats don't seem to be able to do anything but watch and point fingers and I don't think they have the power to pull it off, and if they ( Repubs) wanted this stopped , it would have happened....Do I need a tinfoil hat, or not?
