It was originally meant to resolve problems in Mafia convictions (to prove conspiracy and convict the don and top capos even though they didn't actually do the dirty work), but it's proven interestingly handy in political convictions.

Because basically, they can seize all of your assests that THEY assert you purhcased with your ill-gotten gains when you are indicted. You don't have to be convicted. And if you want them back, sometimes you have to sue the government, even if you are aquited of any crime.
They recently added RICO provisions to 18 USC 2257, so if you make a porn movie called Granny Gang Bang, where all the performers are well over 18, you can lose your company and everything you own because the notice on the box that says "all performers are over the age of 18..." says that S orenstein is the custodian of records instead of Steve Orenstein.
One undotted I or uncrossed T can cost you your business.
