Stripes: (need) More diversity in American Forces Network
More diversity in AFN

I can’t help but feel American Forces Network does its viewers and listeners a disservice when I read stories about radio shows that get canned (“Liberal radio host nixed by AFN,” article, Stars and Stripes, Oct. 19).

I have noticed there is very little selection in the way of programming, which is why I usually don’t listen or watch their services. Since I have been stationed overseas, my radio has had the least amount of use, outside of the CD player, and the only thing I watch on television is whatever local shows I may come across when flipping TV channels.

I avoid AFN programming due to its tired format and lack of diversity. I miss radio celebrities such as Michael Savage for his conviction and courage to say what he thinks, and the fact he apologizes to no man for calling it like it is. Even if you wish to avoid politics, there are entertainers such as Howard Stern or Adam Carolla of the talk show “Loveline” who could entertain the late-night radio crowd, while younger listeners are tucked away in their beds, and out of harm’s way of the more “seasoned” topics. Has anyone considered taking that approach?

I miss having a good, raucous laugh at the end of the day and don’t see the harm in any of it. While I know it’s impossible to please everybody, neoconservative celebrities such as Rush Limbaugh irk me, and Paul Harvey’s “News and Story” puts me to sleep. Please, let’s get more diversity.

1. He misses radio celebrity Michael Savage
As a former member of the military, I realize that savage overstepped the bounds of acceptable free-speech (in the US AF Code) when he said he'd like to kill liberals. That comment is one of many that got him yanked from their programming.
