George Allen (R-VA) may be the most dangerous man in America.
Keep an eye on this guy, folks. I just heard him yukking it up on Imus again. He has a carefully cultivated, bullshit, "aw shucks, good ole boy" persona that, for reasons I can't begin to fathom, people seem to buy. Here in Virginia, he campaigned as a moderate; first for Governor, then for senator; and got away with it both times. The truth is, Allen is a half-bright, extreme RW whack job. He promised Virginians to be a voice of "reasonable moderation" with regard to abortion. Instead he has been an anti-choice zealot, voting in favor of every abortion restriction that has come before him. He told Virginians that he supported the assault weapons ban as "good law" and would help to keep it in place. He then refused to vote for its extension, and the law lapsed. He sees no implied right to privacy in the Constitution, no mandate for the separation of church and state, and can reliably be counted on to invoke the old southern bigot's favorite code phrase, "state's rights". His only regret as Governor, is that Texas managed to beat out the Old Dominion in the number of executions performed on his watch. Toss in a few incidents of racist grafitti and the proud display of a Confederate flag on his living room wall as a young man, and you've got a really nasty little package. We can't afford to let him fly under the radar.

10. George Allen + Karl Rove = Trouble
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 08:19 AM by kurth
Indicted or not, Karl Rove will be mightily bored the next few years. George Allen could become his next consulting project for the GOP.

Rove's personal goal has always been GOP control of the government, and he will do whatever it takes to keep the White House in GOP hands.

4. I agree. He's super scary.
I hope the national Democrats send some dollars to VA to embarrass and defeat him. If he wins the Senate in 06 he'll run for President is 08. He's the 2nd coming of W.

5. "Cowboy George hailed as the Reagan for ’08"
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 08:30 AM by kurth
Cowboy George hailed as the Reagan for ’08
Sarah Baxter, Washington

A TOBACCO chewing, horse-riding, cowboy boot wearing politician called George could be the Republican party’s choice for president in 2008. With George W Bush in political freefall, speculation is intensifying about his successor. The rising star among conservatives is George Allen, senator for Virginia and former governor of the state...

Larry Sabato, a political analyst, was at the University of Virginia with Allen and has kept a close eye on his career. “You want the president to be a leader and he has got the leadership gene,” he said. “He’s handsome and physically imposing; he looks much better on TV than he looks in person.” He also has a “mean streak”, Sabato warned. When the campaign gets going, there will be “no rules other than winning. To him it is just like a football game, you go out there and hit them harder and harder”.

6. Looks like Virginia likes him too
I read that he is so popular that the dem running for gov praises him on the stump. So I guess he is one to watch. Its the ones who (besides McCain, the only Rep I have much use for) smile and talk it up nice as a moderate that I worry most about. Looking back to 1999 what was all the talk of Bush? That he works well with both sides of the political aisle. Well we all know how "that" has worked out

7. He's on the short list for 2008, for sure.
I'm concerned that Cheney will resign and Allen will be appointed VP by Bush.

Anyone getting kissed squarely on the lips by Limbaugh bears watching. Allen must be no good.

15. He's Only Smooth when Rehearsed
When you watch CSpan and he chooses to speak, he sounds like another moron. But he is easier to train than the chimp so he looks better when he goes out for photo ops.

13. Check this out:
http://allen.senate.gov/

That picture all by itself would win him about 25% of the idiot GOP voters.

14. His constant smile makes me cringe
My hairdresser who serves many of the high society in Virginia, has it on good authority, that Allen's wife ran with a crowd that LOVED the nose candy.

16. Just make sure and tie him to Bush
Democrats need to take advantage of one of the worst and increasingly unpopular presidents in US history.

Make sure people know that Allen was complicit in the Bush disaster.

Can we get a picture of him standing next to the flag on his living room wall? That would make a nice ad.

18. Oh, I've been keeping an eye on him. He tows the Bush line
never deviates and supports everything Bush. Your description of his is absolutely correct. And I will add, he is not a smart man-image is all he has going for him, along with football analogies. In many ways he is a Bush clone. No way do I want to have to experience another presidency with another good old boy idiot. I don't think our country could survive it.

20. He'll milk that football association for all it's worth
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 10:39 AM by Strawman
Few things are as popular in this country as pro football. His campaign message will be packaged like one of those "inspirational" stories on the NFL pregame show, and it will probably work. He is scary. His nuttiness will be safely hidden in the comfortable, normal, familiar schema of pro football. I can just imagine Terry Bradshaw asking him to talk about his Dad and the Redskins winning the Super Bowl.

We should just give in and give up on the idea that voters will vote on issues and just recruit some Democratic celebrity/athlete to run and be a figurehead.
