I am not sure if this is a dupe or not! But, I just thought I would share this. I just ran across it a few minutes ago.

<<snip>>
Republican Rep. Tom DeLay’s fate could hinge on a Stetson-wearing defense attorney who not only represented Waco cult leader David Koresh and helped a cross-dressing millionaire beat a murder rap, but is also a Democrat.

1. I just did a search on him at Newsmeat. Here are his donations.

The Democratic contributions looked a lot stronger pre-2002.

2. It still blows a hole in his argument for having the judge recuse himself
He won't be able to successfully argue that a judge should recuse himself for donating to Democratic candidates if his own defense attorney has done the same.

6. I agree. This would be a terrible precedent to set. Republicans can
only have Republican judges over-see their trials. Hmmmm. Do you think they would apply that to any Dems? I don't think so.

5. DeGurein
is a very good lawyer.

He's the guy who got a "not guilty" (or manslaughter or something) in Galveston for the man who chopped up his neighbor in little pieces and dumped him in the ocean.

While ever hopeful, being a pragmatist, I don't expect much from this prosecution, really, other than what we have already gotten, which was to trounce Bush and the Congressional Republcans in the court of public opinion.

It's hard case with the evidence they apparently have, and the law is less than clear. Iffy law and iffy facts favor the Defendant (as it should, even when the Defendant is a Republican, although we have hope in that Travis county jurors are likely Democratic).

We did this with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and got what we needed, even though the case was dismissed.

9. That kind of shoots his argument for having the judge recuse himself
straight out of the water doesn't it?

10. Dispatch from TX - DeGuerin is no Democrat
First of all, we do not "register" with any party in TX.
I could call myself a repub, dem, independent or green and no one could demonstrate it in any way.

It has been publicly posted that the vast majority (thousands of $$$) of his political donations go to repubs.

He only defends REPUBLICANS. Kay Bailey Hutchison is his biggest client - he has saved her bacon from the fire many times.

And the topper is that he goes on TV all the time trashing dems.

DeGuerin is NO DEMOCRAT.

12. I see it more from the perspective that he has donated to Democractic
causes. The only defense argument for the judge to recuse himself is that said judge has donated to Democratic candidates.

If DeLay is willing to employ counsel that has donated to Democratic causes, he can't legitimately argue that such behavior is cause for recusal.
