What if the Republicans shut down debates/ filibusters and confirm Miers? |
|
Harriet Miers should no more be on the Supreme Court than Big Bird. Yet, despite all the moaning we're hearing from the fundies, what's to prevent the Republican controlled Senate from confirming her? They've done everything else Bush wanted for almost five years. What makes this case any different?
Yeah, I know, a lot of them are up for reelection next year. So what. The collective memory of the American public has the time span of the latest news cycle. Aside from which, when you own the voting machines, why care what anyone thinks?
If this woman ends up on the Supreme Court, those of us who are still sane have but two choices: Leave the country, or take to the streets with pitchforks.
Taking to the streets would be suicide, and leaving the country would be either good sense, or a betrayal of everything we always thought we believed in.
Anybody have a third alternative?

2. Don't worry about it too much |

the GOP will break ranks and not vote for her. We need to worry about the God-fearing, rabid fruitcake that gets nominated next.

10. I don't think Bush really thought he could get her through, but I don't |
|
think he was expecting the Republicans to be the ones to block him. They might go ahead and confirm her anyway, but they aren't pleased about this choice.
I think he planned on the Democrats to raise such objections that he could call them obstructionists and then nominate someone else that he really wanted. Then he could complain that it wouldn't matter who he nominates, the Democrats will object. All the time, he would appear to be trying to be reasonable.
Like you, I'm afraid to see who he nominates next.

from confirming her. Don't be surprised if most Dems vote to confirm too. She certainly won't be any worse then many of the other possible nominees. We are NOT going to get anyone we would approve of under any circumstances.
Third alternative? Sure work hard to get Dems elected and wait for a couple more justices to die off.

it's the Conservatives who are most vocally opposed to the nominee. They COULD ram her nomination through but it seems rather unlikely.

6. I'm thinkin' you probably won't have to worry about Harriett. |
|
There's lots of Pubs who don't want her either! I've heard 2 possibilities. One is that SHE will ask to be removed, and remain in her current job that she loves. The other is that a group of Pubs from the judicial committee will trot up to the WH and explain to their leader that they don't think they can push this one through, so he needs to select another nominee.
The really scarey part is...WHO will the next one be???
