I'm repeating something that Molly Ivins said in her column a few days ago about the anti-torture amendment. We can apply this to a lot of issues - it's a great talking point IMO.
This came to mind while I was listening to the Washing Journal on C-Span. I'm sick of hearing all these Republican's calling in with the latest talking point and saying "George Bush is the President and has the right to appoint whoever he wants."
Bush is the President for 8 years - the Justice will prob. be on the court for 40+ years. My opinion is that he was never really elected - and even the most die-hard Bush supporter would have to agree that he was BARELY elected and that at least 50% of the people in this country strongly disagree with his values.
Also, does that mean that it's ok for any elected offical to do WHATEVER they want?
http://www.creators.com/opinion_show.cfm?next=3&ColumnsName=miv"This is the United States of America. It is our country, not George W. Bush's personal property. The United States of America still stands for the rights of man, for freedom, dignity and justice. We do not torture helpless prisoners. Our soldiers are not the SS, not the North Vietnamese who tortured McCain and others for years on end, not bestial Argentinean fascists, not the Khmer Rouge.
