What is a "Permalink?" -- do you know?

I'd like to point out something that would really help all of our linking habits here on DU. When you link to the front page of a blog -- ANY blog -- then people have no way of knowing what specific story you are talking about. The story you are talking about may be the top story on the blog when YOU link it, but one hour or one day later, it might not be the top story.

A "permalink" is a link that will not go away. To create a permalink, most blogs have a line down at the bottom of the post. For example:

Posted by Joe Schmoe at 10:44 AM | Comments (44)

Usually, the timestamp in this line is also a link. Hover your mouse over the link, right click, and and do "Copy Shortcut." You will get a long URL that usually will put you directly into the blog entry that you want!

I'm ignorant. I right clicked on permalink on the bottom of your post and then I clicked on copy shortcut. And that was that. Where is this long URL I was supposed to get? What next?

From there, you can paste it into your post! Do another right click and choose "Paste" and it will show up in your post. :hi:

Ok, hover mouse over "Permalink" on the post you want to link to.

Right click.

Choose "copy shortcut."

Then start your new post. type your reply, etctera, and then right click again where you wanna insert the link. Choose "paste."

That should do it. :D
