lived in Paris? From what I understand, the Italian CIA was involved somehow, and the Niger report materialized when some legal documents, as well as some forged ones, (one of them being the infamous Niger report), was passed on to whom? The Italian CIA?

Ohhhh, I'm sooooo confuseeeeeeed!

A very heavyweight figure in the international arms trade and a central player in Iran-Contra. He's on the DO NOT TRUST list with the CIA, but the Bushites and Likudites still treat him as one of the good ol' boyz.

Yahoo! News - Iraq Issues Warrants for Chalabi, Nephew
Iraq Issues Warrants for Chalabi, Nephew

Sun Aug 8, 6:47 PM ET

By JAMIE TARABAY, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites) has issued arrest warrants for Ahmad Chalabi, a former Governing Council member with strong U.S. ties, on counterfeiting charges, and for his nephew Salem Chalabi — head of the tribunal trying Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) — on murder charges, Iraq's chief investigating judge said Sunday.

The warrant was the latest strike against Ahmad Chalabi in his removal from the centers of power. A longtime Iraqi exile opposition leader, he had been a favorite of many in the Pentagon (news - web sites) but fell out with the Americans in the weeks before the U.S. occupation ended in June.

Both men denied the charges, dismissing them as part of a political conspiracy against them and their family.

Salem Chalabi, named as a suspect in the June murder of Haithem Fadhil, director general of the finance ministry, called the accusation "ridiculous." His uncle said the charges were "outrageous" and "manufactured lies."

Ahmad Chalabi was somewhat marginalized when he was left out of the new interim government that took power June 28 but has since worked to reposition himself as a Shiite populist. At the helm of the war crimes tribunal for Saddam, the Ivy League-educated Salem Chalabi remains a central figure in Iraq.

"They should be arrested and then questioned and ... if there is enough evidence, they will be sent to trial," Judge Zuhair al-Maliky said.

In Washington, the Bush administration had no comment about the charges against the Chalabis. "This is a matter for the Iraqi authorities to resolve and they are taking steps to do so," White House spokeswoman Suzy DeFrancis.

The warrants, issued Saturday, accused Ahmad Chalabi of counterfeiting old Iraqi dinars, which were removed from circulation after the ouster of Saddam's regime last year.

Iraqi police backed by U.S. troops found counterfeit money along with old dinars during a raid on Chalabi's house in Baghdad in May, al-Maliky said. He apparently was mixing counterfeit and real money and changing them into new dinars on the street, the judge said.

The accusation is not Ahmad Chalabi's first brush with legal problems. He is wanted in Jordan for a 1991 conviction in absentia for fraud in a banking scandal. He was sentenced to 22 years in jail, but has denied all allegations.

The men were out of the country Sunday but promised to return to Iraq to face the allegations.

"I'm now mobilized on all fronts to rebuff all these charges," Ahmad Chalabi told CNN from Tehran, Iran, where he was attending an economic conference. "Nobody's above the law, and I submit to the law in Iraq ... despite my serious and grave reservations about this court."

"I don't think ... that I had anything to do with the charges so I'm not actually worried about it," Salem Chalabi told CNN from London. "It's a ridiculous charge, that I threatened somebody ... there's no proof there."

If convicted, Salem Chalabi, 41, could face the death penalty, which was restored by Iraqi officials on Sunday, al-Maliky said. His uncle, who is in his late 50s, would face a sentence determined by trial judges.

Born in Baghdad, the younger Chalabi studied at Yale, Columbia and Northwestern University and holds degrees in law and international affairs. He served as a legal adviser to the interim Iraqi Governing Council and was a member of the 10-member committee framing the basic transitional law for the new interim government.

But Ahmad Chalabi's star has steadily declined. He was once considered Washington's most likely choice for Iraqi president after Saddam's fall, but he was never popular in Iraq and ended up without a job in the new government.

A frequent guest on news talk shows in the United States, Ahmad Chalabi had significant, and controversial, influence on America's Iraq policy before the war. His network of Iraqi exiles in the Iraqi National Congress provided the Bush administration, and some news organizations, with reports on Saddam's purported weapons of mass destruction programs.

Those weapons were cited by the United States and Britain as the primary justification for the Iraq war. When no significant weapons stocks were found, Chalabi became a liability. He has continued to insist that the weapons exist.

Chalabi also was accused recently of informing Iran that the United States had broken its secret intelligence codes, a charge he branded as "stupid." And around the time of the raid on his house, U.S. officials privately complained that Chalabi was interfering with a U.S. inquiry into money skimmed from the U.N. oil-for-food program by pursuing his own probe.

As relations with his American backers soured, he has tried use the fallout to enhance his stature among Iraqis, many of whom saw him as an American puppet.

"I've risen higher in the esteem of my people and I'm now much better positioned politically in the country, because I'm in sympathy with my people. This is what it is all about," Chalabi said Sunday.

Among his campaigns to win favor with Iraqis have been purging Baath party members from the Iraqi government and attempting to set up an exclusively Shiite political party. He recently played peacemaker in ending violence in the Shiite holy city of Najaf in June.

27. Thursday May 20, 2004 Associated Press

Mr Musawi said the Americans also raided offices of Mr Chalabi's group, the Iraqi National Congress (INC), which was a nexus for Iraqi political exiles during the Saddam Hussein era and had close ties to US officials, especially in the Pentagon.

"The aim is to put political pressure," Mr Msawi told the media. "Why is this happening at a time when the government is being formed?"

There was no comment from the US military press office. Police sealed off the residence in the city's upmarket Mansour district and would not allow reporters to approach. At least two Humvees could be seen, with a dozen US troops milling about.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have accused Mr Chalabi of trying to interfere with an investigation into alleged corruption of the UN-run oil for food initiative, in which Saddam's government was allowed to sell oil despite international sanctions to buy food and humanitarian supplies.

76. Yes. Chalabi was under CIA house arrest last May.
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 05:08 PM by leveymg
The reason given was that they suspected him of corrupt trading in goods in Iraq and of passing information on to Iran. But, I believe the real meat of the matter is this:

In late 2003 and into the Spring of 2004, the FBI and CIA had confirmed the line of authorship for the forged Niger Yellowcake documents. Those were traced from Cheney's office back to the Pentagon Office of Special Plans (OSP) which obtained them after Michael Ledeen, Harold Rhode and Larry Franklin met in Rome in December 2001 with Manoucher Ghorbanifar. Chalabi, along with Ledeen and his old CIA and Iran-Contra figure Dewey Claridge and another former CIA officer, are now accused of forging the documents.

As a result, the OSP was closed down in late 2003. Special Prosecuter Partrick Fitzgerald was appointed on December 3, 2003. Larry Franklin was arrested in the OSP-AIPAC spy case on May 4, 2004, and Chalabi was detained later that same month. Ledeen and Clardidge remains at large, but has been implicated in the plot by former CIA counter-terrorism chief Vince Cannistraro and others.

The circle is almost squared.

40. Former CIA officers Duane Clarridge & Alan Wolf were the principal forgers

"Previous versions of the report were redacted and had all the names removed, though it was possible to guess who was involved. This version names Michael Ledeen as the conduit for the report and indicates that former CIA officers Duane Clarridge and Alan Wolf were the principal forgers. All three had business interests with Chalabi."

He has REPEATEDLY spouted the falsehood that Wilson claimed to be sent to Africa by Cheney. That's a falsehood every time he says it. Medidamatters has nailed him repeatedly but he continues to repeate the "big lie" and feed the coprophageous reich. Tweety lies and mischaracterizes damned near everything he spouts.

I provided a link to a DU thread that discusses a DailyKos posting.

On reflection - I bet the real CIA is pretty pissed at Poppy for not pulling Baby back onto the reservation long before now. At this point, I would be willing to bet no one returns Poppy's calls. They could go after him (Poppy) as well - lots of folks really angry about Brewster Jennings, etc.

Senate Select Committee on Intelligence investigated the origins of the 16 words and after interviewing several CIA officials and reviewing multiple documents concluded that the CIA and the British realized fairly quickly that the documents were forged and based its conclusions on other sources of information.

They were in the SOTU address because Bush and Cheney refused to consider the balance of the evidence. Rove is smart enough to prevent Bush from actually lying in the SOTU address, so he chose the words very carefully. He had Bush say "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." If anyone challenged that assertion later the White House would simply produce the British report making that claim and say: "See, I was telling the truth. The British did say that Iraq was trying to acquire uranium from Africa". As it turns out, that's precisely what happened when the SSCOI investigated.

Look, this is a settled issue. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence looked into this over a year ago and ripped the White House and the CIA for only looking at the intelligence that suited their pre-formed opinions. Yes, some of it was bad intel, but lots of it was perfectly good intel. For example, it is undeniable fact that in 1999 an Iraqi delegation went to Niger to talk about increasing trade and that the Nigerian Primie Minister believed that their intent was to acquire uranium. There was also lots of other evidence to suggest that they sought uranium from other countries too. But that's not the issue and it never was. The issue was and always will be one of competence. Bush is an incompetant fool who is incapable of digesting information that contradicts his predefined world view (Iraq Bad. US Good. Saddam tried to kill daddy. Must invade).

Its all in the link, if you really aren't familar with this stuff I'd suggest you read it.

121. The issue of the British Intelligence being the source of the SOTU address
Has always bugged me, for some of the reasons you note. Here's an old thread about the forged documents, as this was being discussed at great length some time ago on DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1939214#1947536

So, regarding my question at that time, 'Have Blair/British officials ever divulged who their source was for their claim? And, if not, are we left to assume that they are, in fact, both from the same source?' -- It appears, then, that there were other sources to the Brits regarding this matter, if I'm understanding your explanation correctly.

At that time, you can see from my #59 post on that thread, as I was delving into this matter, I kept wondering if the Brit's source (the one that the WH said its intelligence was based on) was one and the same as the forged documents in question with the Wilson case. If so, then Bush & Co. were just setting up a circuitous deception.

80. Ladeen is the man NOT Chalabi
Fortunately, there are good signs. Fitzgerald has reportedly asked for a copy of the Italian government’s investigation into the break-in of the Niger embassy in Rome and the source of the forged documents. The blatantly fake papers, which purported to show that Saddam Hussein had cut a deal to get yellowcake uranium from Niger, turned up after a December 2001 meeting in Rome involving neo-con Michael Ledeen, Larry Franklin, Harold Rhodes, and Niccolo Pollari, the head of Italy’s intelligence agency SISMI, and Antonio Martino, the Italian defense minister.

snip

The other American attendees at Ledeen’s Roman Holiday are also worthy of scrutiny. Larry Franklin was recently arrested for leaking classified US government information to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Ledeen sprang quickly to his defense but Franklin faces prosecution next year and is most probably cooperating with prosecutor Fitzgerald.

Judith Miller is Unnamed Woman in AIPAC Spy Ring Indictment
More Notes by Barry O'Connell

Page 24 Paragraph numbered 7of the AIPAC Spy Ring Indictment (see below)
http://news.findlaw.com/nytimes/docs/dod/usfrnklin...

This is in reference to a meeting between FRANKLIN (Larry Franklin) and FO-3 (Naor Gilon) at the Pentagon Officers Athletic Club. The woman referenced is Judith Miller. Miller is a reporter for the New York Times who is as I write held in a Federal Facility in contempt of court. She wrote many now discredited stories on WMDs for the Times. The Charitable work was The Iraqi Jewish Archive which Judith Miller and Harold Rhode cooperated on with Ahmad Chalabi.

I have reason to believe that the conversation between Larry Franklin and Naor Gilon about Judith Miller included a reference to Valerie Plame. This case becomes a time bomb if it is revealed that Mossad had a part in the outing of CIA agent Plame.

3. That makes complete sense. Who else would Franklin be talking about?
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 03:52 PM by leveymg

Let's see. June 3, 2003. That was twenty days before Judy Miller's first recorded meeting with Scooter. She claims the name "Valerie Flame" written in her reporter's notebook was from another source, which she says she did not disclose to Fitzgerald, pursuant to the agreement her lawyer made with the prosecutor to keep Miller's post-release testimony to the substance of her discussions with Libby.

It all fits nicely. Maybe too nicely. This is why. It appears that the whole Plame outing conspiracy was structured to avoid prosecution under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982. (IIPA). If Judy can plausibly claim that she learned Plame's identity from Gilon -- a Mossad officer -- rather than from Scooter, that would let Libby off the hook as far as an IIPA conviction is concerned, along with anyone else at the White House she also passed identifying information about Plame to.

That particular law requires the prosecutor prove five things: 1)that the official who leaked the identity had a security clearance and 2) access to a classified document, 3) he intentionally leaked it to 4) a person without a security clearance, and 5) the US gov't was taking active measures to ptotect the covert identity of the agent who was outed.

If Gilon, an agent of a foreign government, was Miller's source for Plame's identity rather than Libby (or another US Gov't official, such as Bolton) the conspirators may have thought they had created a firewall between themselves and violation of the IIPA.

But, here's where this strategy would fail and potentially create enormous leverage for the prosecutor. If Fitzgerald had evidence that Gilon conspired to inform Miller about Plame's identity, that's Espionage and conspiracy. A violation of the section of the Espionage Act dealing with revealing classified documents to foreign powers is a potential capital offense. That's some pretty scary leverage.

I think it's entirely possible that a very powerful agency of the US Government prevailed on the Israelis to convince Gilon to talk to Fitzgerald. If Judy were linked to espionage, she would sing her head off before the Grand Jury about what she knew about Scooter and the others she talked to. And, that's exactly what I believe she has done.

If Miller was the unidentified woman referenced in the the Larry Franklin OSP-AIPAC spy case indictment, she is the key to linking the Bush White House to a foreign espionage ring that illegally funneled forged documents to the Vice President's Office in a plot to involve the US in a war with disasterous results. That is treason. It is potentially fatal to any and all involved, particularly to those officials at the top of the conspiracy.

Another possibility is that Larry Franklin was Judy's source. We know that at some point he was detected by the FBI, which "turned" him into a cooperating witness. Franklin continued to work at Feith's and Wurmser's Office of Special Plans (OSP) at the Pentagon until it was shut down, and he was indicted last summer. For months, the Bureau monitored Frankin and his conversations and meetings as he moved within the OSP and neocon network trading documents alleging Iraq and Iran WMDs back and forth with the Israelis.

If this second scenario holds, that would likely mean the FBI was also monitoring Miller, as she spread the poison pill around the White House.

Either way, OMG.
