WHY don't people stand up for themselves? |
|
I got a call from a woman (I work in radio) telling me about this guy in a truck who always steals gas from them and other stations. She was describing the truck and all that and said; "And it's a real pain because our boss keeps threatening to take it off our paycheques." I said, "Hold on, that's illegal, he can't do that." She interrupts and says, "Well, that's not the point," and keeps on going about this guy and what he looks like.
What does she mean "That's not the point" it's not her fucking fault this creep steals gas, and now a person making minimum wage is supposed to pay for that? What the fuck? How is it people just accept this kind of treatment?

2. Because we live in an S&M society. |
|
Half "stand up for" their every whim, no matter who it hurts.
The other half just pull a Rodney King ("can't we just all get along?")
If you aren't either of those two, welcome to the interstices.

3. Some people are passive. Especially if they are on the job. People |

try and get along. That job may be so important that it is easy to be abused. Why it is so illegal to harrass at work because people are so limited in their choices. But I agree if it was me I would say "get an ***ing camera and capture his liscence plate on camera and then talk to me". If there is a problem like that - the manager should take over and hang out in every shift until the freak is caught. That is his job. I'm usually right on to the penny when it comes to cash. One time I was twenty off and my boses docked me - I think they use it as a tool to ferrit out the people who steal money from them. So perhaps the manager doesn't believe your friend. That is heartbreaking - I know i was insulted. But it happens in retail - that some people steal. I don't think I've ever worked with anyone who stole - though there are creeps out there (you wouldn't believe how creepy the most evil people in the world can be in the workplace) in any walk of life and if your friend is really passive - some gas creep may have marked her/him as an easy target - someone easy to dominate and steal gas from. A bad situation all around.
But people react different to stressful or scary situations. I would never work in a gas station. I'm sorry for your friend.
Tell them to find a new minimum wage job if they can. Somewhere with a manager onsite so they can rely on the manager to be strong and responsible if passivity is an issue for them.
