New York Police Officer Convicted in Shooting Death of Unarmed African Immigrant

NEW YORK (AP) - A police officer who shot and killed an unarmed African immigrant after a serpentine chase inside a warehouse was convicted Friday of criminally negligent homicide.

The judge who heard the retrial of Bryan Conroy acquitted him of the more serious charge of second-degree manslaughter. Conroy, 27, is to be sentenced Dec. 2 and could receive probation or up to four years in prison.

The officer, who was working undercover, fatally shot Ousmane Zongo, 43, two years ago inside a storage warehouse during a police raid in which two suspected counterfeiters of CDs and DVDs were arrested.

Zongo, a native of Burkina Faso in West Africa who repaired art and musical instruments inside the building, was not connected to the counterfeiting case.

Conroy contended that Zongo tried to disarm him, and he shot Zongo four times - two wounds were in the back - in self defense.

2. Again?
How come I knew the victim was black before I read that part?

3. 4 years? That's it?
The GOD DAMN FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE:argh: :puke: :grr: would be screaming for the Electric Chair had one of their "brothers in blue murdered". It's rare that a corrupt/abusive cop gets any punishment (police claim that they don't want to kill or hurt people yet they are such uber chickenhawks for the death penalty :eyes:).

Break up the police unions. There's a solution.

5. FOP is a criminal organization.
If they didn't help out the families of cops killed in the line of duty in what little way they do, they wouldn't be worth a shit at all.

8. No. The FOP is an advocacy group.

They simply advocate for their members, the police. However, a good deal of their "advocacy" (which may be seen in terms of laws passed/punishment) is 100% WRONG.

Why is there but a mere 4 year sentence with PROBATION. The average citizen would get much more than 4 years in jail for this CRIMINAL ACT.

7. But it was the judge who threw out the more serious charge.
A black life just isn't that important to some people, including judges. A cop shoots a black man in the back, calls it self-defense, then is sentenced on a lesser charge. He'll probably get probation. I knew immediately that the victim had to be black.

10. Reminds me of the "I was cleaning my gun defense"
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 08:34 PM by MountainLaurel
You'd be surprised at how many battered wives get shot as their husbands are cleaning their guns, including one women in my local area who was running out of the house screaming for help as her husband was cleaning his gun and it discharged. But he, ironically, was a local sheriff and we know those good law enforcement officers would never do anything like shoot their wife. Oopsy.
