Quick update on my dog who was shot yesterday
I brought him home today.
Spent part of the day preparing a place in his cage inside the house.
Get him home and he is running around in the yard.
The dog has 9 lives I swear!
The police can't do anything unless we witnessed who did it.:(
Thanks for all the well wishes.
He is doing fine and I will be purchasing him an anti-jump harness.
Thanks all.

29. It went in about 3 inches left lateral to his rib cage
2 inches below his spine--looks to be in his flank area.
They would have had to get into the nerves and spine.
The doc said since he was moving around without any problems, best to just leave it there.

43. We don't generally go digging bullets out unless it is absolutely
necessary for medical reasons. It does a lot more damage to surrounding tissues than it's worth. A bullet lodged in flesh is not a problem, as long as infection is controlled. A bullet lodged in the upper gastrointestinal tract (stomach) MUST be removed, because the stomach acid will eat away at the lead and cause lead poisoning.

Years ago I practiced in a small town, and the hunters there were notorious for disciplining wayward hunting dogs by shooting them in the a-- with their birdshot. They would bring in these poor dogs just peppered with shot, and we would take xrays and they would be FULL of it on their rear ends. We just clipped and cleaned the wounds, and put them on antibiotics. They invariably recovered without complications. Nowadays we would report them for animal abuse for doing that.

12. WOW! That's great!
We once took in a stray cat. When I took him to the vet, he got an xray since he had some other problems. The vet discovered a BB inside him. He must have been shot a long time before since there was no visible wound on his skin. So, my heart went out to you yesterday. It's a shock how people can be so cruel.

I want you to know there are those of us who deeply care.

I know your first thoughts are the care of your friend but if you find out who did this, may they be punished for the crime. However, if you do not, they still will get their due for this.

Let us know how he does.

23. Everyone Please Read this Link. I think this is an appropriate time
time to post this. It is a website that these people started about their dog who was killed by a neighbor. I have sent them condolences and following the trial when it comes up on the guy.

If you have time and love animals, you might drop them a line. Thanks for your time reading and taking any kind of action you are able to do.

38. that's such a terrible story
Poor little thing... she was so sweet.
What a sick sick man to do such a thing to a dog. For those who don't have time to check out the website, my guess is that he almost certainly didn't mean to kill her--but kicking a dog that hard shows that he is one seriously disturbed and profoundly angry person with a temper quicker than a hairtrigger.

27. So glad your pup is doin' good!! Please consider getting some
powdered Vitamin C and putting, oh, a gram, 3 times a day, in some wet food for him, for maybe 5 days - great infection prevention - I had a cat who got a bad snake bite years back (ate Wally's skin off to the bone!!!) - I dosed him good with C, and the vet said he'd NEVER seen a cat heal up so quick!
Sure wish I could recover from wounds and traumas as quick as our critter-babies do!
Happiness to all!

34. Yeah he is a jumper
I've built 3 fences and he can even jump a 6' privacy fence.
He climbs like a cat.
One of our fellow DU'ers gave me a great suggestion, so as soon as the stitches heal, this will be his new attire.
After being hit by a car and breaking his shoulder, back leg and toes...and now getting shot, this will certainly beat that.
I really didn't expect him to make it home this time and neither did the vet. He was advocating putting him down until yesterday afternoon when he perked up.
I didn't think he would make it to the vet--his tongue was hanging out, his eyes were glazed, and he was seizing. Our vet wasn't here and neither was the one in the town next to us. I had to drive 45 miles to a vet with him doing that.:(

35. Mine has always been a jumper.
He never did get over the fence though... but he has worn out his hips. He is getting too old and arthritic to jump now. I never knew there was such a contraption or I would have tried one on him. Good luck. I hope it works. You may also save his hips in the long run.

39. I am so happy for you and your dog
I missed your post as well, but if I had read it it would have kept me awake at night. My dog is a jumper too. I brought her home when she was 10 weeks old. She just a small cock-a-poo, about 17 inches tall now. When she was just 10 weeks old, she could jump the 36 inch gate I had used to train all dogs. I went and get the highest one PETCO had, 48 inches. She jumped that as well. It's unbelievable really, because she was so little then. She is so athletic and so fast, when she runs, she looks like she is flying. From a sitting position one day, she sprang over the back fence into the arms of my neighbor (to lick his face).

So if someone here has given you an idea how to keep your dog from jumping, please let me know. I constantly worry she will get away and something will happen. She's coal black and hard to spot at night. I never let her out without staying with her and keeping my blocking technique in full swing.

I am so happy your dog has survived. I hope you continue to let us know your dog's progress (and what is the dog's name?).

67. Good.My apartment caught fire. I repaid the cat who warned me by
closing the door behind myself - I cared only that no humans were hurt. She got out once the oxygen was gone and the fire died down - there was a way to the door once the fire died down a minute later.

All I cared about was humans. She was angry at me for a bit. Then - just never trusted me again. She is a wonderful cat. My father took her on and didn't want to give her up to me once I had moved and she was comfortable with him. She doesn't remember these days - but she had a pretty clear memory of how I "didn't save her" when she warned me.

Hopefully your dog will see you as the hero you were and trust you like there is no tomorrow. In traumatizing times for them - they need that.

I love my dog, Scout(irrascible and unsociable to all but his people), but I also live on a golf course. Right now, I have rigged up a retractable leash to screw in rings on my deck, so he can move in and out of the house when we aren't home, but can't jump the fence. He has alot of freedom but if you have a better idea, I would love to know!

65. I'm so glad he's doing better and is home.
Remember I posted that dogs can really surprise you? They are tough little sweeties! Glad you're both feeling better.

The shot could have come from a passer by, aren't you in a state that allows weapons in cars and such? I'm hoping that it is not a neighbor, because that would be pretty hard to handle if you found out. Anti-jump is good... We had a really excellent dog enclosure within our fenced yard, that we used when we had to leave our little escape artist home alone. It was rather large, chain link, and had a tarpish roof. Just a large dog kennel/run thing. We only used it if we couldn't just pop her into the garage when we left, or when we'd be gone for a while. If your harness doesn't work out, perhaps you can try that...

66. I'm so glad.
This is the first I've heard, but I've been there, and I'm glad to know your dog will be ok. Give him a  when he is able.

My dog was shot by an unknown person when I was 14, and home alone. We saved him, but if it had taken 5 more minutes to get him to a vet, he wouldn't have made it.

70. Reminds me of the three-legged dog
who walked into a bar and said

"I'm lookin' for the man who shot my paw."

Glad your pup is okay. May have to put down my eight month old lab due to a fractured and subluxed left rear patella.
