Tom's been a hog - words from Texas!
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 01:44 AM by countryjake
On CBS Evening News, they covered Tom Delay's little scene that was made in the courtroom on Friday. Then they moved on to his tirade out in the parking lot of the Texas statehouse, where he condemned Ronnie Earle, naming him no less than eight times in a four minute statement.

THEN they switched to an interview with Beverly Carter, Republican (precinct chairwoman) of his home district.

Here's what she had to say,

"I've not heard of any Republicans that are supporting Tom at this point. Win, lose, or draw, whether he's guilty or not guilty, they've kind of had it with him."

She ended the interview with:

"Pigs get fatter but hogs get slaughtered and Tom's been a hog!"

21. I love Texas
A Texan called Randi recently and stated several times emphatically that the spread in Crawford is a farm, not a ranch.

I'm hoping Texas can liberate itself from the bastards who've hijacked it. They seem to have gotten the hog that leads the pack.

3. And to all Republicans: "You lie down with hogs, you get up with fleas."
Why don't you see these people for who they really are before you let them become your party's leaders?

Bagging DeLay has proven to be more difficult than nailing Jello to a tree. I'm happy to see Texans are diligent in their efforts.

9. bugman had a good run, but got way too full of himself. His "...I am
the government" comment caused a lot of people to ponder the possibilities. There's bad feelings about his high-handed ways of wielding power on both sides of the aisle. And as the g.o.p. precinct chairperson in delay's own district pointed out, none of his former friends and allies are rushing to his defense. He's toast. I wouldn't be surprised if his old pals don't throw him to the wolves themselves.

30. Seems they may have already done that...
tho, it may just be "guilt by association" spurring them on. I suspect there's probably quite a bit of shredding going on, all over the country, and lots of time spent "going over the books" with a fine-toothed comb.

19. Will the Media Finally Start Quoting Critics of Republicans Regularly Now?
You know, it's interesting--disgusting--that even though people who actually know DeLay personally and know what has been going on, are starting to speak out about the pressure, bribes, threats, illegally long voting periods on the House floor, money everywhere, and being ordered to vote for or against things they did not support--and the fact that no one is supporting DeLay--the media is still playing it as if it were a Democratic operative, (the Prosecutor), playing politics with the Grand Jury, and DeLay did nothing more than everybody else does all the time. Despicable. Not only are the Bush neo-cons totally out of touch with the country, but now their dicksucking corporate media is as well. Only CBS is reporting things with any kind of objectivity, and they are being criticized for it.

Soon enough though, when the whole tide has turned, all of them will pile on and be attacking Bush (only Bush, not their Republicans as a whole), and none of them will ever refer back to all the years when they themselves helped cover it all up for their Republicans, and all the times they slandered any Democrat who tried to get the truth out. Covered over with stardust, it never happened...

28. They will when it's Republicans criticizing Republicans!
But you're right, I'm not sure that ABC even aired anything about Delay's little grandstanding...I checked both other networks, and it must have been a tiny blip, if they did. Certainly no story of the general feeling among Delay's constituents.

It'll be interesting to see if the media can recover some semblance of respectable reporting, as things heat up. They've been cowed for too long!

33. wish I saw that. But what I realllly wish is that the damn Repubs
would speak up a little earlier about all the slime. If she's so aware of his hogdom now, one would think she had a clue sooner than this.

They've gotta know who's filth and geee, wouldn't you think some of them would have enough of a soul left to get involved against this fascist takeover? for godssake, how blinded are they by the games that they can't see that screwing over the whole country screws them too?

38. I recommend this article on Delay by Molly Ivins some months back:
It shows why he is NOT beloved by anyone in Texas. He is, in fact, not a typical Texas politician at all. Molly should know, she's been dealing with Texas pols for a long, long time.

The stench of rotting ethics

Only Tom DeLay's removal can freshen our nation's capitol

AUSTIN, Texas -- The John Wesley Hardin Died for You Society has a theme song that goes: "He wasn't really bad. He was just a victim of his times." I sometimes find this useful in trying to explain Texas political ethics to outsiders.

My theory is that few Texas pols are actual crooks, they just have an overdeveloped sense of the extenuating circumstance. Woodrow Wilson Bean once warned himself that he was skatin' close to the thin edge of ethics. After a moment, he concluded, "Woodrow Wilson Bean, ethics is for young lawyers."

(snip)

I grant you a certain resemblance to some of our more notorious standards: "Everybody does it" and "They did it first" are actually considered excuses here. But I categorically reject cultural responsibility for Tom DeLay. Real Texas politicians are neither hypocritical nor sanctimonious. A pol does what he must -- fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly -- but no pol of the Old School, when DeLay served in the Lege, would add self-righteousness to shady dealing.

(snip)

Another quality that makes DeLay an un-Texas pol is that he's mean. By and large, Texas pols are an agreeable set of less-than-perfect humans and quite often well-intentioned. As Carl Parker of Port Arthur used to observe, if you took all the fools out of the Lege, it would not be a representative body any longer. The old sense of collegiality was strong, and vindictive behavior -- punishing pols for partisan reasons -- was simply not done. But those are Tom DeLay's specialties, his trademarks. The Hammer is not only genuinely feared in Washington, he is, I'm sorry to say, hated.

(snip - much more at link)
