Who is your state's one or two biggest political embarassments and why?
Here in Arizona, I would have to say its:

1: Joe Arpaio; "The Country's Meanest Sheriff," who keeps his inmates in tents in 120 degree heat, gives them pink under, bread and water, chain gang's them and verbally humilates them ever chance he gets. He boats a low recidivism rate. . .which is deceiving because his inmates level Maricopa County upon release and commit crimes in other counties, namely Pima (my county), Pinal (the county between Tucson and Phoenix) and Coconino (Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon's county).

2: Rick Renzi: Congressman from Northern Arizona. This prick is stone aged stupid and a shill for the most extreme fascist dogma you can imagine. It's hard to believe that an area that brough the country the Babbitt family also produced this turd factory. It's amazing how anti-environment he is when the major metropolitan area in his district is the most environmentally conscience area in Arizona (Flagstaff). A majority of his district is National Forest.

Who are your biggest embarassments?

51. I've become convinced that its what Republicans want
look at their heroes: The Chimperor, Ray-gun, and Ahhnold.

All completely unqualified, inept, incompetent morons.

But they all had that one common thread: The mythmaking surrounding them.

Everything they do is meant to be epic, to create the illusion of greatness.

That's all Republicans want. They want a face to go with the lies.

They want to be lied to. They NEED to be lied to.

and in a tough call between Coburn and Inhofe, I'd have to go with Inhofe. It's an embarrassment of riches in the embarrassment department here in the Sooner state.

God, if Istook is the best they can do in the governor's race, things are looking mighty, mighty good for Brad Henry. Barring a Diebolding of course.

(I still think they used "safe" states like ours to pad the vote totals for Dumbo.)

Tied for first!

Tim Pawlenty - R Gov - Kowtowed to the Taxpayers League so much that he managed to have the state government shut down.

Norm Coleman - R Sen - Bush's personal lap dog from Minnesota. He totally embarrassed the state on numerous occasions, including calling for Kofi Annan's resignation.

I vote Coleman first since he is capable of more damage to the entire nation.

Timmy the Tool said this week he will "stand by my leader" (Bush) even if Bush's poll numbers drop to 2% (which they did among AfAm voters). Shows you who Timmy cares about!

crisis until he had forced a shutdown, BUT the legislature was able to pass a bill reinstating a hunting season for mourning doves!

He was willing to cut subsidized medical insurance for the working poor (which comes from a dedicated tax and isn't supposed to be used for anything else), BUT he is all behind proposals to build three, count 'em, three new stadiums in the Twin Cities area, one each for the Twins, the Vikings, and the U of M Gophers.

The guy is a class-ring salesman who is the stalking horse for the right in Washington state.

He's started initiatives to cut license tabs to $30 and every other goddam rightwingnut No Tax scheme. Paid himself handsomely from donations to those initiatives, too.

The sheep follow him like the Judas Goat he is.

He has done more damage in Washington State than any other single human being.

Oh my that is hard - Arpaio and Renzi are certainly "Special". We also have JD Hayworth, Kyle, the entire GOP in the State Legislature. Plus the past humiliations imposed by Governors Mecham and Symington.

The Arizona Republican Party could supply "village idiots" for every town in Asia with plenty left over.

31. You nailed the Kentucky cabal dead on - just a small correction
it is Elaine Chao, not Elizabeth. Elaine, who is totally unqualified for the job (is there any other kind within the Chimpy White House?) of Labor Secretary but benefits from Georgie's cronyism by being a friend of Dubya and to high level officials in the Chinese government. The McConnells have been in a five year battle with the Courier-Journal not to release the names of the contributors to their McConnell School of Public Policy at U of L. They have been ordered by judge after judge they have to release the names but still they refuse. Guess they are going to let it head to their friends on the Supreme Court. Every other program at every other state school immediately released their lists. What are the McConnells hiding? I attended U of L as a pol sci major and that whole program is crawling with repug toadies grinding out a bunch of future repug toadies. Not a nice place - even though there are plenty of good Dems in the program, they just don't get the "breaks" or scholarships as often as the "true believers."

Be sure and add Bunning to the list. Not only is he a corrupt repug (honestly, are there any other kind anymore?), suffering from senility, he ran a campaign last fall smearing his opponent as gay. And finally, Bunning required extra security because he was sure that the terrorists were coming after him personally - extremely paranoid.

Then add Ron Lewis, preacher/repug politician who ran on the "Contract with America" nonsense who made several promises and immediately forgot them once he went to DC. He is just as corrupt as the rest of the repug cabal, he just throws in a few extra "amens" to prove his devoutness. Like all Kentucky repugs - sold his soul to McConnell years ago.

Oh, hell, you can't just name one or two "worst" politicians in a state. The repug party has actively sought-out, recruited, trained, and ran nasty campaigns to get them into office for just the times we are seeing in DC today. And they all need to go.

I hate Arpaio with a passion. He's got these TV ads recruiting people to be his lackeys, and every time they come on my blood pressure skyrockets. "Come join me in making inmates feel like crap instead of rehabiliting them! It's FUN!"

My psych prof last year almost went off on a rant about him in class... the man is the embodiment of what's wrong with our penal system.

33. Cathy Cox
Democratic Secretary of State in Georgia. She sold out the voters by defending Diebold when she had clear evidence of serious problems with the voting system; she campaigned against and is responsible for the defeat in 2004 of voter verified paper ballot legislation; she gave Diebold the full power to run the 2002 election, including programming ballot definition files, because they failed to live up to their contracted obligation to train election workers to do it; she contracted with Diebold to grandfather in the current voting system even if it doesn't meet 2002 voting system standards; she contracted before the election in 2004 with Diebold to upgrade the voting sytem software beginning immediately AFTER the election, thus giving them free reign and authority to basically scrub the machines. If there was any evidence of malfeasance, it's gone now.

If she's thinking Diebold will put her in the governor's office in 2006, she might want to think again. They elect republicans. Yes, maybe when she put the machines in for the 2002 election, she did win by an amazing 61.1% when Cleland won only 45.9% and Barnes only 46.3%, I can see Georgia Democrats using that great touch screen technology for the first time, scrolling down the list voting for Republicans Saxby Cambliss (52.8%) and Sonny Perdue (R - 51.4%) then all the sudden switching and voting for Democrats Mark Taylor for Lt Gov (51.9%) and Cathy Cox (61.1%).

She is a disgrace.

someone many of you have probably never heard of.

Here's some DU: Kansas threads about this bitch and the evil, horrible, shit she is doing

She is a memeber of the Kansas Board of Education, so you know that can't be good.

And she is one of the most outspoken and prominent members of the board.

If you read any of these links, make it this one:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=153x2595
Its some detail into her background as a drug abuser and a sexual deviant. And it discusses how, apparently, that means she is qualified to define morality for the entire state.

He was our idiot attorney general who wouldn't let airlines serve drinks in the air above KS back in the 70s. He also raided Amtrak trains going through the state. Can't let anyone see Kansas through a train window while drinking, you know.
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2002/jul/14/the_attorney_generals/

He used to take the press along on drug raids. He was famous for getting pretty young things out of bed in the middle of the night with the cameras rolling. He had promised to "leap into the drug-ridden hippie communes of Lawrence with both feet."

See post #33 for the story of what happened in 2002 that explains our current situation.

I've met both Cathy Cox and Sonny Perdue. Cox betrayed us and Perdue is an asshat. He asked for my vote and I told him I never vote Republican. He said "I'm really a populist." Right, I thought. So was Lester Maddox and Gov. Talnmadge. :(

I live in Athens which is blue for now, but the Republican barbarians are at the gate. They manged to push through a non-partisan voting law for our combined city-county government. Idiot voters were misled by a vauge and " non-partisan" ad campaign. Then, the state legislature changed our primary from July to Oct. so that runoffs will be over the T-Day week when residents and students are on holiday. :grr: Repubs from solid red (partisan voting) counties around Athens have attempted to run Trojan Horse black candidates in order to try to wedge their way into office. It didn't work when we had partisan voting but I'm worried about the next election. :( Of course, the Repubs are not calling for non-partisan voting in their county with NO elected Democrats.

Where do ya'll live? Welcome to GA! :hi:

It's not just that it's a red state, it's that it has SO many obnoxious little bitches who think they're hot shit because they can afford sufficient credit to live in a crappily-built McMansion and to drive a full sized SUV.

Anyway, if you had to narrow it down to two GA embarrassments, it'd have to be Zell Miller and Ralph Reed. The former because he wounded us in 2004 with his Jed-Clampett-on-Crystal-Mett RNC speech; the latter because he's probably going to be elected even though there's more dirt on him than a bulldozer at a landfill.

54. Idaho has a lengthy history of political embarassments
Here are the current top two:

Rep. Mike Simpson (R - ID), Speaker Pro - Tempore of the House, held open a five - minute vote on HR 3893, the Gasoline for America's Security Act, for over forty minutes. For nearly all of that time, Republicans were unable to produce a majority vote in favor of the bill. Rep. Simpson repeatedly stated that he was using his discretion to hold the vote open until all Members had voted. But as soon as Republicans had gained the needed number of votes to pass the Act, he closed the vote. The final vote total was 212 to 210.

Larry Craig, Republican senator from Idaho, told hometown newspapers -- compiled by Newhouse News Service below the fold, that flooded parts of New Orleans should be abandoned, that Louisiana is just as corrupt as Iraq and that cops in New Orleans are given a license to steal.

Driving through Louisiana on I-20, early one Sunday morning my sister and I stoppped at a Texaco station near the Mississippi border. The convenience store was full of men with David Duke caps and buttons. I can't put my finger on what or why, but we were both terrified, so terrified that we still talk about it. If we were black I'm not sure we would have made it out of there. It felt like 1965 all over again.

Philadelphia - my hometown - cesspool of corruption.

The entire state gov't (Esp. Perzel - R, Deweese - D, & Cappy) - bigger cesspool of corruption.

PA is a bipartisan embarrassment - we try harder.

There are too many statewide to name but the worst is Rep. John Gard, Who doesn't even live in the area he (mis)represents.

85. Renzi is also one of DeLay's guys and he has something like 12 kids!
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 10:34 AM by SiouxJ
He once responded to a letter I wrote him with something like, "as the father of 12 children . . ." It might have been 14, I can't remember and he seems to keep that info a secret in public. I never heard about it during his campaign; only found out about it when I wrote him. He definitely has a Catholic agenda:

"His later endeavors include Renzi and Co., an insurance company designed to help nonprofit organizations. Today, it insures almost all the Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the United States and Canada. The centers counsel pregnant women against having abortions."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/elections/2004/candidates/22615/

Here's the info connecting him to DeLay:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20051011/pl_usnw/new_data26_congressmen_bought_out_by_rep__delay__says_campaign_for_america_sfuture__reps__caught_in_delay_s_web_of_corruption_u

Oh, he's also rumored to be having an affair with our buddy Katherine Harris: http://bagnewsnotes.typepad.com/bagnews/2004/10/emstronga_show_.html

on edit: I wouldn't call him a Zonie (though he was born here), he's mostly referred to as a carpetbagger by way of Virginia.

Every time he opens his mouth it seems something stupid spills out.

The problem is he could very well be governor next year, and I do not like the possibility his opponent could be Henderson mayor Jim GIBSON.

A Gibbons/Gibson contest is a nightmare waiting to happen because of their names being almost identical. I hope Gibson is defeated in the primaries.

... he just has that creepy Vincent-Price look. High hairline, thin drawn face, high cheekbones, crooked teeth, sunken eyes.

I really hadn't heard (or even wondered for that matter) about Vincent Price's sexuality. I suppose it's possible, but I also suppose that if there were any truth to it, that many in the gay community would have eagerly clamored to "claim" him as one of our own. If such a thing has happened, then I'm completely unaware of it.

who is mercifully behind bars. He was the mayor of Waterbury, CT and ran on the repubican ticket against Joe Lieberman a few years back. He was being wiretapped by the FBI under suspicion of mob activities, but they also overheard him arranging with a drug addict the delivery of her two little nieces to his office to have them fellate him. They locked him up right away and he hasn't been seen yet. Hopefully, he is now some Bubba's bitch and the karma keeps on coming!

In NYC, it seems to consist of rich insiders having fights with each other. Upstate, there is no party. It's not uncommon in town and county races to see the same name on the Republican, Democrat and Conservative lines. In fact, it's not uncommon to see two Republicans fighting it out in the primary for the spot on the Democrat line! Meanwhile, good candidates are shot down time after time by other Democrats!

147. May I add some Albertan embarrassments?
If I may be so bold.
1. Solicitor General of Alberta decrees that all the colour TVs in the lockups must be swapped over for Black and White TVs, even though the inmates, themselves, paid for the colour tvs. One little glitch. After all the colour ones were removed, the Solicitor Generals department had to reinstall them because they COULD NOT FIND ANY B/W TVs. Wonder how much that little effort cost the taxpayers.

2. Just last week, the SG decided that no caffeine/no sugar for inmates. King Ralph (the premier) put a kibosh on that real quick. Seemed just a tad mean spirited, don't you think?

3. BSE... shot shovel and shut-up. Said by Ralph. Out loud. What a moran.

I could go on, but I have to finish my laundry.
