2. Thanks.Too bad DU is so strapped for cash, they sold out to Brown's $$$$.
I read Brown has a $1.2 million campaign fund. No wonder he can afford the daily ads here. You ever heard that punch line, "We've established what you are, now we're just quibbling about the price." That's what I think of selling DU ads to wealthy candidates in a Dem primary.

I think this site should be about equal time and debating policy differences between Dem candidates and defeating as many GOPers as possible. It's traditionally been the GOP who swamps the media with constant ads out of their ill-gotten campaign contributions from lobbyists. The major problem with our political system is the pressure on politicians to constantly raise funds. I think the high road for DU would have been to use it's not inconsiderable clout (given the number of activist members here), to pressure the national Dem party, the Ohio Dem party, Brown and Hackett to work out a solution so that both men ended up on the ballott in November, '06, running for DIFFERENT offices. It's still not too late to do that.

3. I think Brown has even more now....
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 12:31 PM by ohio_liberal
He recently had a fundraiser with Al Gore and raised a schidtload of money.

I think Brown was trying to get a head start on Hackett with the BlogAds. I don't know how effective it has been. I really can't slam the sites that carried the ads, and they were numerous. It's just paid advertising, the same as any other ad that DU runs. Hopefully Hackett will have some up and running soon too.

I don't think the blogs and websites have all that much clout with the national party or any particular politician (I had to clarify that I DONT mean Paul Hackett). They're out of touch, you know it. We're just an ATM machine. Proven to raise money, but not really listened to.

5. from Paul's site......
I'm fed up with what's happening to my country. I'm ready to reset America's priorities. Just like you, I watched the same mistakes made an ocean away in Iraq repeated here at home in the wake of hurricane Katrina. This is a crucial time for America. The issues we now face and how they're resolved will have a lasting impact on us, and our children.

31. Maybe you would rather Democrats dress up in tutus and tiaras
and be the good little Fairy Princess. Seriously, Most Americans think Republicans are better at defending the country than Democrats. So when we get someone with any sense of Military leadership it helps. "Defense" is the final plank that is holding up this bag of shit many people are calling conservative. When that plank is removed there is no hope for them. The bag of shit will fall and people will see how ugly it is and how bad it smells.

44. Who said anything about the military?
At least Wes Clark has run a large contingent of people before.

Assuming Paul Hackett wins his senate seat (a MAJOR assumption), he won't even have two years of senate time under his belt by the time the Convention rolls around.

Vice President in '08? You can't be serious.

9. I want Hackett
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 12:22 PM by safi0
To win I really do, but because Ohio has such an early primary the question has to be can he raise enough money to keep up with Brown. If he wins the primary he'll have enough money, with the way the DCC has been outperforming there counterparts, but with Brown's huge on-hand advantage, will he just sink Hackett?

17. Really? That's
Very odd for them to endorse Hackett, especially since Brown has been such a friend of labor. From my perspective, having UAW and other union organization stay neutral would've been a victory for Hackett.

19. It's just a rumor
I'm curious though, why do you think it would be a victory for Hackett for unions to remain neutral?

I can't say much about union leadership, but I know many union members themselves who are mighty pissed at politicians as a whole. Both parties' candidates promise the same things for Ohio workers but deliver on just about nothing.

The ISU threatened to run Al Gore out of town a few years ago. It was the first time I've ever seen a union verbally bash a Democratic candidate.

Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 12:47 PM by safi0
Of his strong record on Labor, Brown would get a lot of there endorsements. Because of that assumption I thought the unions staying neutral would benefit Hackett. Remember Brown is the guy who lead the fight against CAFTA. We have no reason to doubt Hackett would be great for Labor, but he doesn't have a record.

Some of them I'm sure will stay neutral in the primaries. I think the USWA PAC waited to see how the primary went before they donated to Hackett. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out, I guarantee it. :)

35. UAW wouldn't make the same mistake twice, would they?
endorsing a candidate before the primary?

I love Dean, but that was a tactical error they made endorsing him on the coattails of Gore, then retracted the endorsement after the famed scream. remember?

12. Of course that is the first question people ask
I think we'll have to wait and see what happens on Monday when he announces his candidacy. I think it's going to be up to the netroots to at least get the ball rolling for him. My understanding is that the DSCC isn't going to give a dime towards any primary in Ohio this time. Brown isn't as prolific a fundraiser as people would have us believe. The most he's raised on any one campaign was $1million or so. He's very frugal, doesn't spend a lot, and sits on wads of cash for long periods of time. He will not be able to do that in this primary.

Now is the time to make ourselves heard with the Dem leadership. If we want Hackett to survive the primary we've gotta give.

16. From what I understand
With Brown is that he's simply good at saving money. Kudos to him for that, that is a very good thing, but he's not going to raise 1 mill in a quarter in this primary.

32. hehe
I think I broke this over at http://www.buckeyesenateblog.com

The big news recently was the UAW rumor, which we had heard was a possibility last week.
We are also hearing that Brown doesnt have a lock on as many county parties as he thought he would - and his campaign is currently in a little disarray. Cluster#$@% is the word we heard describing it
http://www.buckeyesenateblog.com/2005/10/scrubber.html

If Hackett can show a strong qtr of fundraising we are doubtful there will be a primary. Rumor has it Hackett has already raised over $250k, and now that his website and actblue page is up the netroots can help out again.

So if you support Hackett now is a very important time to contribute. Money is the sole indicator of credibility in a primary right now. If Hackett can show he has the power to raise a large amount of money, that takes away Browns single biggest advantage, and would scare off many of his big money contributors making his run less likely.

40. How much will polls
Have an effect on this race. When you have a primary like this with two good Dems, a lot of it comes down to electability. If one candidate polls much better against Dewine, could that sink the other.
