Do you write like a man or a woman?
I found this gender test tool in an article about Judith Miller, to be used to test the hypothesis that she may not have been the author of some of her NYT articles.

I just took it and I write like a man. AAHH..

You may have seen this before, but for those who have not...

I used a long story I wrote about a personal experience. I entered a few paragraphs and I was waaay on the male side, then I started over and entered a few different paragraphs and was waaay on the female side. It was a story I wrote in one long sitting, so I dunno about this....

35. Yeah, Mixed Results
It is pretty cool, 'cos I am trying to write a novel and I pasted in different excerpts of it. It gave me different responses, which could be reflective of the duration of time over which I am writing it. The encouraging this was, most of the female viewpoint sections it said were female, most of the male it said were male.

43. I was responding to the following statement...
Mentioning the husband is always a tipoff."

I was surprised how upset one person got in a post after someone assumed his/her sex (can't remember which) based upon the person saying either husband or wife. (I think that it was a woman saying "wife".) Luckily, I wasn't the person who made the assumption (because the person rebuked the poster), but I very easily might have been. My frame of reference changed because of that post. That's all that I meant by my post.

15. Interesting.
I tried two different pieces. The first was the body of a letter detailing my work experience and education intended to be read by prospective employers. The second was the opening paragraphs of a computer science paper.

The letter registered as female and the paper as male. At first glance, I would say that it's not particularly accurate.

26. It didn't say. The author had access to achived documents of
Miller's. The poster was merely suggesting that the author run them through the genie. Didn't see a response from the OP.

I was just glancing through the algorthym on this. It has to do with use of pronouns.

I don't think that it is meant to be used as detecting one's sex, but in categorizing style. I would think that all of us write differently depending on what we were writing.

But, you would think that Judy's writing style for her articles wouldn't change -- whether she has a masculine writing style or a feminine.

I submitted 3 0r 4 of my posts and in my case the test worked - all posts were detemined to be male and I am male. I looked at how they score the thing and I saw that I got a bazillion points for the use of the word "the". Well male, female or neuter how the fuck can you write anyhting without using "the"?

female score - 42
male score - 144)

30. you are funny ! Read the attachment on the algorithm for the
test. It explains. I think this is more an indication of writing style, not as a determinant of your sex. As for Judy, you would think that all her articles should be the same (all male style or all female style). If you notice an obvious pattern of change -- who knows - maybe Scooter wrote them for her.

I put half of this paper in first and came up with a female rating. After putting in the full paper, I came up male. The half I put in first, had to do with religion's effect on women's emancipation. The whole paper had to do with multicultural education.

BTW, I am female.

I fed in my current work, an academic article, and it blew the top off the "male" charts. (The scientists in peer review will no doubt be subconsciously impressed.) The fantasy novel I'm writing was close to the cusp, but still male. Then I fed in a passage of my literary novel that's supposed to be written by a woman, and I fooled the algorithm!

I don't think anything that's ever happened has given me more confidence as a writer. Thanks for posting this.

narrator (male=female) ("Urizen"). Story with a 1st person female narrator gave strongly female narrator ("My Intended"). Story with 1st person male narrator gave strongly male narrator ("Sister Death").

The last two stories have strongly typical gender type narrators which is why I chose them for the test. Another short story, "Walker" 1st person, gender left unspecified, gives an ambiguous result in the gender reader.

Here is a link for my archive page at Aphelion.com in case anyone wants to test.

Lots of times people who reply to me assume I'm a male and I always figured it was because my DU name is so vague. Maybe my writing style also misleads them.

72. Hmm, my gender appears to depend on the subject matter
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 05:51 PM by neebob
I tried this on a blog entry of similar length from the same blog as the other one and got similar results: 9XX female, 12XX male. Then I ran it on a 4,800-word chapter from my book where I talk about myself, and the genie correctly guessed I'm female. It could also have to do with the length of the passage, since the book chapter is eight times as long as the blog entries.

Okay, so then I tried it on a 4,900-word white paper that I wrote professionally, describing a process. Female Score: 4998, Male Score: 7333.

I think the genie's as mixed up as I am.

74. I write like a reporter - which is how I was trained
but the Genie thought I was a guy.

Nopie - I don't trust this to determine Judy Miller's writing style because reporters are trained to write a certain way: inverted pyramid and without splitting the verb (example: "I certainly am going" versus "I am certainly going").

It's a fun little exercise, but it doesn't prove much when nearly every reporter since 1930 has been trained to write in AP style.

76. Dayum! That's funny, I write like a female.
But a lot of people on DU mistake me for a male. Must be my moniker :D

Oh, well, I was writing a story about a woman, and so I inserted a lot of feminine key words, I suppose. Maybe it would have been different if I'd written a long diatribe against Little Boots.

Thanks for sharing this
