NEW ORLEANS
More bodies are found daily, weeks after search called off
Many discovered by residents upon returning home; toll rises to 1,053
By JENNIFER LATSON
Knight Ridder Tribune News

NEW ORLEANS - Nearly two months after Hurricane Katrina struck and more than two weeks after the official quest for bodies was abandoned, corpses of 9th Ward residents are being found every day.

The discovery of new remains shows no sign of slowing down: Workers hired by the state remove several ossified bodies each day, many of them discovered by residents returning home.

As of Wednesday, the death count from the hurricane was 1,053. That includes 20 more bodies than the total counted five days earlier, and 80 more than were discovered by Oct. 4, when the search was officially called off.

31. Exactly. Remember how journalists were not allowed to watch them
gather the bodies, and then after the court order required it, they were not allowed to use their cameras or write stories about it.

There is a conspiracy to keep the official death toll down to a fraction of what it really is.

22. Those washed out to sea and those very decomposed
That were sucked down into the drains or scattered about by animals.

No doubt, they will not recover all of the bodies.

23. I agree with you there
People have been washed out to sea, washed into swampy areas, sucked into the NOLA pumps. There will never be an accurate count of the region's dead.

18. Amy Goodman's peice on how a body was left lying
for more than 10 days, with police, military, FEMA, and all other manner of authories walking or driving past was just beyond comprehension.

I've seen the pictures of bodies left lying in front of the Superdome for days with children gazing at them from a few feet away.

It is heart-wrenching that our government just did not care.

5. New Orleans
already has a strong "ghost" reputation. This whole Katrina thing is going to really become part of that history.

Very sad..very creepy.

I can't imagine coming home and finding my long dead father or mother. What a nightmare.

15. Yes... this will definitely add to the intense symbolism
and supernatural legendry re: NOLA...

I could not imagine being so ashamed of my country a few short years ago. What must the world think of a people that is so disrespectful/disdainful of their own...?

Just imagine the conditions that these remains are in after all this time. It is of course no coincidence that this is happening in the poverty filled 9th ward.

30. Yes it is that hero teenager, Jabbar Gibson. Here's his story:
He had never driven a bus before, but he saw that people were helpless and he stepped forward with the greatest courage and compassion. Wnen he was stopped by police, they saw what he was doing and sent him on his way with their hopes and good wishes. And he MADE it with his busload of evacuees.

27. The spontaneous fires bothered me too..
They seem to have started after the people were evac-ed out, and I always wondered if that might have been a clever way to kep the body count down.. Gather a bunch of bodies in a "holding" area, and then it mysteriously catches fire.. The family members of those poor sould are conveniently scattered all over the country, and will just accpet that Grandpa & Gramma are "gone"..

20. Where is
the matching of the missing to scattered survivors? Where is the estimation of the delayed lost corpses washed out to sea during the second storm or simply by the cutting off of the search prematurely? What happened to estimates in a count challenged country like the good ole USA?

33. what a horror ...makes me crazy mad..people worked their whole lives
they raised their children, many probably fought in our wars..and they did what they were supposed to do as Good Americans...and because they were poor or in an area *'es buddies want to put casinos in..they were left to die ..and then rot in their death...i hate my country now..i hate it because most fucking americans just don't give a rats ass!

i really feel hate for my country.. that i used to love so dearly..i feel utter disgust...and anger in me..that just wont go away..same as 9/11 ...the families lost ones are not being respected...and in afganistan..the burning of bodies with total disrespect and distain...i fucking hate * with such an awful feeling inside me...

i am an inch from saying ..bag it all.. and get the hell out of this <now> hell hole we call the USA!

how did we get here...and i hold those who got us here 100% responsible!

38. I so agree with you
and empathize. I can't imagine what dark forces have taken over the spirit of this country to allow this to happen. I understand somewhat the fact that stupidity and ineptness led to the whole debacle but I can't understand walking past a body for five days. How difficult would it have been to find a room in that dome and designate it for the bodies? Marines would never have let their comrades rot in the street... hang over fences. God. This can't be my country. This wouldn't happen in America.

Don't leave. It is going to be wonderful when the sun comes out again. We have seen the depths and we can demand we not go back there!

Passerby discovers decomposing body hidden among storm debris

01:18 PM CDT on Friday, October 21, 2005

WWLTV.com

New Orleans Police are trying to identify a body which was found Friday morning among debris left over from Hurricane Katrina.

At about 9 a.m., someone on North Rampart and Elysian Fields found the body on the neutral ground and flagged down some National Guard troops.

The body had been put in a trunk and was badly decomposed.

Authorities have not identified the body, and were unsure of the gender of the body. Police ruled it an unclassified death as of Friday afternoon.

Beyond comprehension. The media is as responsible as the bushlovers. They should be yelling every day about this example of horrible and evil way the bush/republican fascist cabal disregards life and the sanctity of life.

They should be yelling with no less intensity than Anderson Cooper did when he described the dead woman on the street in Mississippi being eaten by rats.
