Reporters Without Borders: Miller's jailing undermines US press freedoms

From eRiposte at the Left Coaster: "I have always appreciated the work done by Reporters Without Borders (or Reporters sans frontieres, RSF) to serve as an organization to preserve the freedom of speech and speak out for the rights of reporters everywhere in the world. This week, however, I saw their annual Press Freedom rankings for 2005. Imagine my shock when I saw this in the summary of their report (emphasis mine): The United States (44th) fell more than 20 places, mainly because of the imprisonment of New York Times reporter Judith Miller and legal moves undermining the privacy of journalistic sources."

eRiposte goes on to tear down the 'Miller as martyr' myth. And rightfully so. Far from being an issue of limits on press freedom, the trouble with American journalism is the gross negligence, the abdication of ethical principles, the blatant Pre$$titution by so many members of the media. It's a problem of choice, not necessity. Nobody forced Tim Russert, Andrea Mitchell, The Note, MSNBC, Norah O'Donnell, the New York Times, Bill Schneider, Chris Matthews, David Gergen, and so many others to spend the past five years shilling for the Bush administration. It was a path they chose, and they bear a good deal of responsibility for the damage done to America's moral standing.
