A Message to DU from Ambassador Joseph Wilson

I've been corresponding with Mr. Wilson over the last several days, just to keep tabs on things. I mentioned in my last email that a lot of people are pulling for him and Valerie, especially at DU. He wrote back:

"All the outpouring of support has been of great comfort to us these past two years of nonstop attacks. The stakes are enormous. This is all about whether our government can take us to war on lies without any fear of being held to account, and whether our democracy can survive the coalition of fascist forces that have seized control of the levers of power.

We are bracing for another round of attacks from the RNC. I understand that their talking points have been updated. Rapid response from you, The Democratic Underground and others will be needed and I know they and you are up to the task and I thank everybody in advance for all of your good work now and over the last years. Remember, to paraprhase Dick Cheney (no, not the "Fuck off" statement to Senator Leahy), they are in the "last throes" of desperation.

the oppostion. We should have teams formed for each major cable talking head show. And as soon as we hear an unchallenged lie we should begin a flash of e-mails and calls into the program where the offense took place. As soon as it is done we should report back here to some talley board on the lie, who said it, and who let it go unchallenged, and what the DUer did or said to counter the lie. 102. This is an excellent idea, and Yes DU did it before, during the post

debate online voting polls. It was wonderfully organized, with a major thread to all M$M sites, including newspapers for LTTE's, etc. We could easily do this with response to RW 'talking points' and our 'anti-talking points.' We would need a separate temporary extra forum category (separate from LBN, GD, GD-Politics, etc) and the media page could be listed as it was pre-election, as a Skinner thread at the top of every main page.

BTW, I noticed a DU thread here yesterday (but lost it before I had time to read it) that headlined with something like 'We need to attack RW 'talking points' more effectively...' Wish I could provide the link.

This isn't the first and the last time many of us here can or will say "I told ya so"...and how many of the things that were "speculated" or "prophisized" here have turned out to be truth. If anything, it's the synergy of this place that has led to frustration as so many of us were outraged by what we were learning and doing so way ahead of everyone else. It is true...rumors work themselves around the world, while the truth is putting its pants on.

The rough days are surely ahead as this regime and the Repugnican party won't go easily. There'll be lots of talking points, lies, distortions, distractions and other games to either test our resolve, knock us off focus or deflect from their accountability. We must stand firm and never forget. If the Wilsons are vindicated, that will be just the start of restoring dignity to this country...the rest will be up to us in being a source for truth and strength and to turn this into electoral gold and really start on the hard road back.

I just caught up with this thread and I had to say it. We've spent a lot of time lately at DU excoriating the New York Times for the fishwrap that it has become, in its disgraceful coverage of the Bush Cartel's war and the traitorous skulduggery of its star reporter Judith Miller, but the Washington Post also deserves to go down in history as the NYT's equally derelict and decrepit partner in the collapse of American journalism.

This editorial could have come straight from Karl Rove's desk--it is that twisted. It is utterly lacking in critical thought, and in any understanding of the foundations of our government--the crucial balances that must be maintained in order to avoid tyranny, especially the balance between authority and dissent, and between government and the press.

I cannot help but think of the NYT's courageous publication of the Pentagon Papers, and the Washington Post's relentless investigation of the Watergate scandal, at a time when these newspapers were key guardians of our liberty, and vigilant monitors of out of control executive power. Now they are just warmongers and corporate shills, and have become completely unreliable.

It is all the more wonder that Joseph Wilson has been able to stand against this hurricane of disinformation, with the nation's two papers of record (past tense) piling it on, in favor of war, murder, torture, deceit, unparalleled financial corruption, and outright treason.

It was great when I flew from Hawaii to DC to film the Conyers' DSM Hearing (for one reason I physically had to CHASE Rep Conyers down the halls in the underbelly of Congress because Pelosi's aid wouldn't let me in the Media filled room - the reason I flew there was because perhaps CSPAN 3 might cover it, and I wanted it FILMED for it's importance) - because I use the DSM Hearing as an Axis for the film, the Plame Outing and DSM are joined at the hip and PROVE each other IMHO..

Lots of good footage of Wilson laying it all out, and like I said, UNDER OATH in Congress..

He makes it very clear and I've used the parts of the media that were True, along with additions to make the Plame Outing comprehensible and above the SPIN, and MAN, are they SPINNING this one :)

we aim to please, we like to think that we basically initiated the beginning of the Flash political attack ad back in 2000, when American Stranger and I were "dueling" with Flash pieces on the DU and decided to join forces to create Takebackthemedia.com

Since then many others have sprung up like Bushflash, Fiore and others who do great work (we were buddies with Jib Jab when they started hitting them out of the ballpark, some of their earliest stuff was insanely wonderful - rapping Forefathers, etc, loved those guys)..

Then we got more politically active and spent the last few years travelling and making films - we haven't had the chance to sit down and SLAM Limbaugh and others for a while, but now that I've got this film out of the way I'm looking forward to doing more flash, some writing of my own (I've got a feature I dreamed up that I think will be a lot of fun), and kick the site back into high gear again..

I don't like the halfblog format we've got going so we'll be revamping the site and getting some real empowerment going..

Hopefully it will be like kicking a dead dog tho, I am dreaming of a White Fitzmas this year - thousands of sheets of papers from Indictments covering Washington DC :)

Joseph Wilson and his wife Valerie Plame Wilson are the most pure level of "patriots" I can imagine. Their courage and determination in exposing the "coalition of fascist forces" is only the latest example of their devotion to our country.

GHW Bush called Joseph Wilson "truly inspiring" and "courageous" for sheltering more than 100 Americans at the US embassy in Baghdad while serving as chargé d'affaires in Iraq, even while Saddam Hussein threatened to execute anyone who refused to hand over foreigners. And while ambassadorships are often passed out as favors, at least to places like the Samoa or Liechtenstein, Joe Wilson served in Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe. These two small nations are among the rare successful African democracies - not exactly token patronage positions. Then he helped direct Africa policy for the National Security Council for President Clinton.

While Mrs. Wilson (Valerie Plame) could be considered a patriot just for supporting her husband in his dedicated, sometimes dangerous work all around the globe, she has earned that distinction all on her own. Her work as a CIA covert operative is probably about the most difficult, dangerous and important there is to our national security. And she was working on weapons of mass distruction. The real ones - not the fabricated kind like the Bush administration deals in.

What is so remarkable about this family is that the vital work they were doing is largely invisible and thankless. They didn't seek glory and fame. In fact, the opposite is true. If the Bush administration didn't include the Niger yellow cake lie in their long list of lies, Joe Wilson wouldn't have written his article. And if the neo-cons weren't so cock-sure arrogant, they would have just retracted the statement and let the name Joseph Wilson drift off to the recesses of our minds along with Colleen Rowley, Sibel Edmonds and William Reed.

No - if the Bush administration didn't fuck this up so badly, the Wilsons would still be serving their country - our country - in a way the neo-con's can't fathom. For the benefit and security of the people of the United States and the world. Thank God for Joseph and Valerie Wilson and people like them.

186. Joe Wilson's speech at UCSB was a great comfort to a lot of us who went

"Comfort" may sound like an odd choice of words, but in a way it was.

This was during the run-up to the invasion, we were marching every week, and were recognizing that the national news media didn't want to acknowledge the depth and validity of the opposition. It was crazy-making.

Joe Wilson came to town to give a public lecture at his alma mater, UC Santa Barbara, and the 900-seat lecture hall was SRO with people from the town as well as the campus. I dragged my friends there.

He minced no words about the Bush administration. He got a lot of applause for saying what we suspected already, and seemed rather puzzled -- said he wasn't sure if we were applauding what he was saying the Bush admin was doing? But we were just SO glad to finally hear someone from that world speak the TRUTH, and validate our sanity.

When I was at a reunion of American dependents in Turkey, found out one of my classmate friends from there's family knew the Wilson family and spoke very highly of them. We need to stand by Joe and Valerie and everyone else that's putting their neck on the line with these crisises (Fitz, Sibel, Ronnie Earl, etc.)
