Cancun is no stranger to hurricanes |

So naturally, humans would need to develop that vulnerable spot into the tourist trap it is today (was).. http://stormcarib.com/climatology/MMUN_dec_car.htm

like warm water, white sand and strong drinks. I love the Yucatan and will return when they get the place cleaned up. Hard working, good people down there, they will be back quickly.

and I dearly LOVE beaches, but it's the permanent structures on or near the beaches that do the damage..
We camped in bohios on the sand...boiled water from the river run off into the ocean, and ate the fish we caught, and the papayas & bananas we picked..
We picked up our trash, and buried our fire traces in the jungle's edge.. Light human footprints in wild areas, keeps the area beautiful and pristine..
Inviting hundreds of thousands of people who strain the limited-resources, and create trash and sewage in return is a sad trade off..

for the first time in 1973 when camping was the only option. I've seen the changes first hand. Tourism brings allot of money to the Mexican economy, Cancun will be rebuilt a hundred time if need be. The only way that will change is if the bird flu kills off a few billion people.
I'm lucky to have known the Yucatan before the development. Yes, I wish it hadn't changed. As long as peoples numbers keep expanding, development will continue. One of the reasons I've chosen never to have children.
