Fitzgerald had Novak from the beginning
by Joe in DC - 10/24/2005 09:53:00 AM

No one ever accused Novak of having journalistic ethics, or ethics period. He sang from the beginning:
A critical early success for Fitzgerald was winning the cooperation of Robert D. Novak, the Chicago Sun-Times columnist who named Plame in a July 2003 story and attributed key information to "two senior administration officials." Legal sources said Novak avoided a fight and quietly helped the special counsel's inquiry, although neither the columnist nor his attorney have said so publicly.

4. Can you imagine a cable network giving a crook that much
time and influence on the air? And they were paying him to do it!

3. How long did it take Rove to find out Novak had babbled?
Did Rove go before the Grand Jury and do a song-and-dance one time, two times, three times, or the fourth time before he realized his dog and pony show was failing to convince them?

One side benefit is that in a case where Novak is just as covered in the stink of treason as the rest of them, even if he gets off without being indicted, he'll wear the label of "dirty snitch" from now on. The honorable thing to do would have been to have stopped Rove in his tracks at the start.

Ooops! "Honorable"??? What am I thinking?

5. I remember back when that column came out
seeing a wrecked-looking Novak get asked shortly afterwards if the Plame affair was as bad as Watergate. He very nervously stammered something about how Watergate brought down a president and this would never bring down a president. He was sweating bullets. I remember wondering why. Now I know.
