Anyone here see "Off to War" on Discovery? |
|
They ran them all day yesterday and they were pretty interesting. It is a show that followed some of the Arkansas National Guard to Iraq. They show the men in Iraq and their families at home. It was filmed in 2003 but it sure shows what those troops thought of being sent there. Not many are happy about it and they have no problem saying what they think of the "war" over there.
Anyone else ever see it?

I have to admit I've cried a few times. The kid on the roof calling his mom for Mother's Day tore me up, my son is nineteen.
In the new episodes, the scene where the young guys are reading the newspaper and it basically says "No WMDS & no Iraq/911 connection" was pretty eerie also. The one kid sums it up "We won't die as heroes, We will be martyrs for a lie"
The way it shows just who is fighting this "war on terror" is quite telling. Their families at home are starting to doubt the purpose of their loved ones being put in harm's way. Also it backs up what the Guard has been saying about poor equipment.

I saw the first one when he was talking about 911 at Fort Hood, it didn't take him long to realize Iraq had nothing to do with 911. He is the most outspoken out of the lot and he seems like a pretty intelligent kid.
I watched it with a friend of mine (she was on the phone because she lives far away), her son got to Iraq yesterday. It was pretty hard to watch it with her but I'm glad she watched it to see how things are over there. I am trying to keep her from worrying so much but it's not an easy task especially since I can't be so sincere about how "safe" he is going to be.
