Sunday Peace Rally, part deux
Went to the local peace rally again yesterday. I have a definite tendance to stand next to the veterans for peace, I've discovered. Not sure why, except daddy was a sailor and perhaps they remind me of our former candidate. My buddy yesterday was a guy with a homemade sign and all of his affiliations on the back. Besides being a Vietnam vet, he's also a Dem, a member of the ACLU, the Sierra Club, and various other orgs.
No counterprotester this time. Might have had to do with the weather, which was cool and rainy. Or it might have had to do with the Packer game on at the same time. I missed him in a way.
There were only 17 people this time. My first time on the front lines, we had 30 or so. But then again, as I said for the counterprotester, the weather and the Packer game may have been the reason for the lower turnout.
I ended up talking to a girl from Northern Wisconsin for a while. Did you know that there are still communes around? I didn't. Apparently we have a few up between Duluth/Superior and the Apostle Island area. Hrm.
I get the feeling that I and the vets probably bother the more peaceful folk among the group. They are non-confrontational, and we tend to yell back. It's being put on by them, not us, a fact I was reminded of last time. So they feel they can dictate how we protest. Still, we yell, but we don't threaten violence, so maybe they're cool with it. I'm too new to be sure, actually.
Mostly we got thumbs up, horn honks and peace signs. I can remember only a few angry stares, one half a peace sign, and two kids in a car calling us morons.
One of the vets shouted at him "Why aren't you in the Army if you support your president?" They shouted something back about shutting up (it's hard to tell what people are saying in a driveby situation). I yelled out "You look able-bodied," and then again as they passed us "I have ENLISTMENT papers!" And I do too (thanks ClassWarrior).
It started to rain as we took the group photo, which is done every week so that people can show their relatives what we're doing and maybe invite them.
Keep in mind this is right in the middle of Sensenbrenner's district, so the thumbs up:middle finger ratio was pretty good.
