I am begining to hate messages that tell me how a person feels but not why
example

"I feel that cindy is hurting the movement and will achieve nothing if she ties balloons to her head"

thats great...if you only graduated from the 5th grade or are just trying to stir the pot.

you need to continue with why you feel the way you do so that we understand where your position is coming from.

"I believe she will hurt the movement because balloons are actually a neo-con invention. I further believe she will achieve nothing because she is using these neo-con balloons that actually have pro war statements on them."

yeah its an outlandish example but holy cow people its like being in junior high here sometimes. No thought, no research just pure emotion and I dare say sometimes some obviously baiting forthought.

1. I logged out last night after one of the exchanges you describe:
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 05:36 PM by IndyOp
He said "There is no evidence that mercury in vaccinations is related to autism."

I said "In this LA Times article they report Merck memo from 1991 that indicates that levels of mercury in a 6-month-old who had all it's shots would be 87 times the maximum allowed in daily diet from fish."

He said "There is no evidence that mercury in vaccinations is related to autism."

I said "In this article Robert F. Kennedy discusses mounting evidence that mercury in vaccinations is related to autism."

He said "There is no evidence that mercury in vaccinations is related to autism."

I said "I said Republican Representative Weldon has a letter on his website describing a study by scientists Burbacher and Clarkson that indicate a connection between mercury in vaccinations and autism."

He said "There is no evidence that mercury in vaccinations is related to autism."

I said "Good night and Good luck"

He said "I don't need luck, I have science."

My thought as a person who teaches science: "Yeah, right."

:eyes:

On edit: I am not convinced there is a link - I was just trying to have a conversation and maybe learn something. Nothing.

6. Really?
Now you wouldn't be calling me out, would you?

Because that would be cowardly, not to mention against the rules, wouldn't it?

And if you were, you misrepresented the entire exchange.

23. I guess I was the annoying one on another subject
There's a study that says that pot smoke doesn't cause cancer. Taking that to mean that the OP was making the point that pot smoke was therefore not harmful, I commented that I couldn't see how holding smoke in one's lungs could NOT be harmful. Sadly, I had no study on my side. Not that I looked for, anyway.

Not all of the intelligent people left!

We gotta stop meeting like this.

I'm now officially a "Cindy hater" even though I haven't said a word about the woman or her actions since Day 1.

So do I get to choose between a firing squad and the gallows or will they just burn me at the stake in the village square?

2. Okay, will post only complete thoughts with background info attached
Do we need to include bibliography as well?

Maybe some people who post here only want to post how they feel (or don't know how to explain why). When did DU become a college writing course instead of a board for political discourse?

14. I have this same exact problem with my roommate...
I say x and he wants complete documents backing up my position. I told him that talking to him was like being in a court of law (no, he is not a lawyer but is a computer programmer who programs health insurance claims systems). I've cut down on talking to him about most things.

I also have a friend, whose father IS a lawyer, around whom I also feel the same way. At least she has an excuse. Her dad probably made them support each statement with prooftext.

15. Whatever happened to "It's just the way I feel"?
Sometimes we just don't like a person or their acts, w/o really knowing why. And, for some of us, it's not always easy to articulate how we feel or why we feel certain ways. Why not just let people have opinions? Like it really affects the OP's life...

I've changed my mind many times on DU because someone gave me a good reason to.

Now it's "You lying sack of shit freeper bush loving troll girlie man shut the hell up"

Well, okay, it's not THAT bad, but you get what I mean.

3. I think Cindy...
should tie the balloons to her shirt or something.. or even better; her belt loop, if she has one. Balloons tied to your head look cool and all but unless you loop the string around your ears a couple times they will fly off...

35. I can see your point , however,
I have finally realized that some people have a hard time with communicating in text. I for one have hand tremors and I cannot hit the right buttons on the keyboard for example. Other people are just not used to typing and explainning thier positions in a text based format. So hen posts are just too difficult too read I will just ignore them.

the op is trying to say that people shouldn't post their feelings on DU unless accompanied by a thorough explanation about why they feel the way they do.

Kind of like thought police but less useful.

This was a carry over from a previous thread, so you kind of had to be there (but be really glad you weren't).

I was hoping you'd enjoy Frist getting his feet put to the fire in particular because of all of the medical legislation that he voted on, all the while insisting there was no conflict of interest.

I know I am.

It's no basis for conversation to just go around asserting your opinions with nothing to back 'em up.

Edited to add: Although now that I have glanced at the thread, this has nothing to do with any other conversation that may or may not have occurred on the board. }(
