Wilma--wasn't this a strange hurricane?
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 09:45 PM by Blue_Roses
I have been following hurricanes for at least 15 years and this one has got to be the weirdest on record. From the path it took, to the time it spent on the Yucatan to how fast it went over Florida and now a CAT 3 racing off into the Atlantic. I heard "Chad"--whatever his name is--on CNN call her schizophrenic.

For those who are weather addicts like me, what do you think?

5. What makes you think that?
There has been widespread damage and flooding in Cuba. The footage of flooded Havana was pretty amazing, especially the storm surge and waves crashing against the older, waterfront section of the Cuban capital.

they were talking about the storm surge going over their seawall...

Cuba didn't miss anything...

3. fellow weather addict here...
yes, she was very weird. I think Chad is right with his diagnosis.

One of the strangest parts was the backside of the eye being as bad or worse than the front (and especially bringing so much surge in behind)...very odd, to say the least.

6. It's not the tracking that is strange
It's the intensity. Forecasters continually underestimated the storm, the effect of shear, and Wilma's ability to regenerate.

14. The upper level shear was....
...always problematic for this storm. The expectation was for a higher shear at the 300mb and 250mb levels. That never materialized. The relatively rapid intensification was due to this and the loop current that the hurricane went through before it went into SW Florida. Fortunately, the storm followed the path of least resistance caused by a mid-level trough (and the accompanying cold front) and its forward motion accelerated. If the forward motion had been slower (10 knots), Wilma would have come ashore as a Category 4 or better storm. So in spite of the damage it inflicted, it could have been a lot worse.

to have that many named storms in a season?

now we're at Alpha...does anyone think we might just make Zeta this year?

8. Seems like all the ones we've had the last 2 years are strange.
Some increasing their strength when they hit land (Andrew, Charlie). Wilma in a 3 day holding pattern. Jeanne doing a 270 degree turn in the Atlantic so Florida coould hold the record for the most hurricanes in 1 year. The new hurricanes creating more damage than the old hurricanes decades ago.

18. I bailed on Florida a few months before Andrew
luccky me because the place I lived in was totally destroyed. Before Andrew I remember people having Hurricane parties when one was coming, probably not too much of that anymore(except maybe in Key West). I talked to my mom tonight, she is in Ft Lauderdale and they had more damage from Wilma than any hurricane in recent years. My sister is in Palm Beach and they had less than what they got last year, I guess it just depends on where you are...

20. I had a mobile home in Kendall. I had to move to Tenn. and got the
thing sold and paid for in May before Andrew went through there. The entire park was destroyed. A lot of my friends were homeless. Unreal. Right now Florida is getting a little boring. Or maybe to little too exciting for me. One natural disaster is OK. 3 in one year is way over doing it.

It was right across the street from Country Walk Homes. I think that was the same street as the zoo.

this thread *should* be safe. Maybe.

Check out the path of the hurricane at its beginning. I don't know much about this but it doesn't seem normal to me, dancing around like that.

28. Sometimes hurricanes do funny things...
Funny "odd"--not funny "humorous." Some of them do skip around & go in odd directions.

Click on a "year" & see all the storm paths. Then you can click on each storm for the details:

but I guess I'm just not "in" crowd material because I have no idea what you're talking about.

If your comment is not tongue-in-cheek, I would appreciate some kind of explanation for why this thread would be locked.

REPOST: Eloriel's thread. Plus a word on conspiracy theories

I want to be clear: at the beginning of this whole disaster I reminded the moderators to remove particular topics of discussion which we have removed in the past. This week has certainly demonstrated - again - that the Bush administration is criminally incompetent, but we are not going to be hosting discussions about weather control any time soon on Democratic Underground.

and not even a "global warning" thread. Just a simple, I love weather (I even have the T-shirt and cap--seriously) and "isn't the path of this storm weird" thread.

I find weather very fascinating and this one was very different for many reasons.

27. Agreed
I'm not skillfully skirting some tinfoil hat theory about climate control, because it's not even on my radar.

Climate shift due to global warming provides quite enough fuel for my discussions. Or, like Blue_Roses, just plain weather talk.

16. The cold front afterwards has been strange too
The temperatures have dropped about thirty degrees.

In the past, it's been hot and humid after a hurricane or trop storm. And when the electricity goes out, I miss the air conditioning like crazy.

But tonight Miami is unseasonably cool and clear and because there are no lights, you can see stars.

29. You being a hurricane junky, then you already know that NOAA is watching
an area of increased activity that could form into a TD. Funny thing is this is the same area that Wilma formed in. I started another thread earlier on it, but it died.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5165783&mesg_id=5165783

or here is what I posted - let me know what you think since you seem to watch these pretty good, and BTW I totally agree with you on the fact that she is a strange stor.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATWDAT+shtml/251... ?

Look at paragraph two/ I have pasted it here.

AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE HAS FORMED IN THE SW CARIBBEAN NEAR
11N78W WITH MINIMUM PRESSURE OF ABOUT 1011 MB. THIS SYSTEM HAS
BEEN SHOWING SIGNS OF INCREASING ORGANIZATION THROUGHOUT THE DAY
WITH BANDING FEATURES BECOMING MORE PROMINENT. COMPUTER MODELS
UNANIMOUSLY SUGGEST THE AREA HAS POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER
DEVELOPMENT WITH VERY WARM WATER AND LIGHT WIND SHEAR IN THE
FORECAST. A SLOW DRIFT TO THE W OR WNW IS LIKELY WITH THIS
SYSTEM. SCATTERED TSTMS ARE S OF 13N BETWEEN 76W-83W.

Being a Floridian and having been through a few Hurricanes, it comes as no surprise that this is forming here. Usually these storms form in the same place in the same season if the conditions are right.

Not to stir the pot or anything, but I though people otta keep an eye on this especially if they live in the Yucatan.

I have had my eye on it for about 24hrs now and thought it was looking like a possible spot for development.
