Jeb Bush is one lucky dude. CNN yesterday was pontificating |
|
at what a good job Bush does when hurricanes approach and how ready and prepared he had Florida for Wilma. Jeb even thought so much of himself that he said the reason we get it right is because "we are Floridians". Not very compassionate of him to not only slam other states for their failures and shortcomings, but also, to ignore the deaths of hundreds due to the failures of the Feds . But the question is what did he do that was so right. Sure he had his own laundry list of things done and to be done. But the real reason he and Florida "succeeded" was that Wilma wasn't Katrina. Bush's mandatory evacuation of the Keys was met with yawns and mostly ignored by everyone. The people in New Orleans were torn apart by many in the public for their stupidity of staying behind or listening to the authorities to use temporary shelters like the Dome and Convention Ctr. So what happens is Katrina causes the levee system to breach and floods causing hundreds of deaths and stranding of thousands who are ignored by the Feds for help. When Wilma blows by the Keys, it doesn't cause anywhere near the destruction of Katrina. But what if it did? What if, the causeway out to the Keys was devastated making it impassable for weeks thereby cutting off the flow of all goods and supplies and what if Wilma caused the flooding and devastation to buildings that Katrina caused? I'll tell you what. CNN wouldn't be talking about what a great governor Bush is. You see the only difference is that Wilma wasn't Katrina and the people of the Keys were lucky and Bush got lucky.

1. Florida has more experience in hurricanes |

The majority of the the plans in place have been there for awhile. Jeb just happens to be the Governor.

I was trying to respond to the original poster without starting a flame war. My intent was to say Florida seems to have their act together when it comes to hurricanes.

hurrricane will dictate how bad things can get. The only reason NOLA was so bad is because people were stranded because they stayed behind or went to shelters. People stayed behind in the Keys and the same thing that happened in NOLA could have happened in the Keys, if and a big if, is that Wilma became a Katrina.

when everyone thought it was over. Damage was not that bad in NO until the levees broke causing catastrophic flooding. But FEMA still did a piss poor job in Miss and ALA.

6. You're a bit off on the conclusion |
|
The reason NOLA was so bad was because the mayor hesitated on when to call the evacuation. Once he called the evacutaion, there wasn't enough transportation to get the poor out of the city.
The reason NOLA was so bad was because the LEVEES broke, flooding the city so those who stayed behind to WEATHER the storm found themselves swimming in muck and mire.
The reason NOLA was so bad was because people who stayed behind were told "3 days food and water" and the federal government, who becomes responsible when a state of emergency is called, falled to do anything to help the victims left in the city, going so far as to claim they didn't know the victims existed.

8. Jeb! is a lying sack of shit. |
|
There are just enough republican sycophants in Florida to keep him in office despite the facts. Leon County, however, which contains the state capital and the majority of the people in government jobs, has consistently voted against him, though. Ask any Florida teacher if Jeb! is lying when he talks about the effectiveness of his educational pogrom. Ask any Florida state worker how much more efficient and effective it is to privatize government work. But, the asshole's teflon. If Jeb! had been President before his retarded brother, we would never be getting rid of them.
