I think a lot of them will continue to deny the discrediting and utter failure of their ideology by making it personal--rightwing extremism is not at fault, Bush is for not being ideologically pure enough. That's why they're jumping on Miers's nomination as some sort of "betrayal" of the rightwing, for one thing.
This allows them to go on thinking things would only work out if a "true" rightwinger were in power. Their ideology did not fail--it was never "truly" tried, etc.
Believe me, they'll always find a way to worm out of it.
