No Army, no yearbook photo

Update to “no army, then no yearbook photo”

Email response from Florida Edu Bureau Chief as a result of my complaint to them regarding “no army, no yearbook photo.” Original DU post can be found http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4989265

I read all three of the links provided in the letter, and I can honestly say I am confused - but that is happening more frequently recently.

Letter follows

Dear Mr. ******

Commissioner of Education John Winn has asked our office to respond to
your request for more information in regards to "Access to High School Students and
Information on Students by Military Recruiters" as mentioned in the No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001.

The requirements of No Child Left Behind have been established
by the U.S. Congress.

Below is a document from the USDOE website with the
information you requested.

In addition, the Florida Department of Education maintains an up-to-date
website at http://www.fldoe.org/NCLB/.

Thank you for expressing your ideas, issues and concerns. If you have
any further questions for the Bureau of School Improvement, please
contact Robin Richards, Regional Facilitator, at rrichards@osi.fsu.edu
or (850) 414-9883.

Sincerely,

Michael Tremor, Ph.D.
Bureau Chief

1. They are basically saying,
"Thank you for your letter and your concerns, which we have ignored. Bushie needs cannon fodder, and if pretending your high schooler doesn't exist unless they talk to recruiters works, soon it will be that you can't get a diploma until you've signed up for a minimum of three years."

How about an alternative yearbook? I would seriously consider this if I had kids high school age.

2. I think the schools make some money from yearbook sales
Perhaps the PTA could produce their own yearbooks, and the students could just refuse to purchase the books from the school...Or maybe they could all just refuse to have theior pictures taken..

4. Back in my day, when I graduated,
the students would have, I believe, united and refused their photos if placed under this sort of pressure. And that would have included the 25% who planned on enlisting right out of HS, from our DOD overseas dependent school.

Proud to be a Brat.

(Of course, with our situation, access by recruiters was kind of moot, but we had great student solidarity.)

5. Our yearbook also sold
advertising space, which brought in enough revenue that the book wouldn't be too expensive to buy. If your area school does that, maybe you can get local businesses NOT to buy ads in protest.

6. If people refuse to buy the book, the advertisers won't want to buy ads.
Why pay for an ad that no one will see?

3. Imagine - a yearbook with no pictures
think enough kids would come together to make that happen?
