Wal-Mart unveils ambitious environmental plan
CEO vows to be ‘good steward for the environment’ in announcing goals

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9815727/

1. Aren't "ambitious environmental plans" something the Dept. of Interior should be unveiling, and enforcing corporate-wide, rather than one of the richest corporations in the US supposedly acting on its own volition?

2. Shouldn't Walmart be more concerned with human/labor rights violations than taking it upon itself to be the Dept. of Interior? What about a Walmart-wide decent salary that transcends the lock the GOP has on the minimum wage, to include "universal" health benefits for each and every Walmart employee?

1. They can sell this because people are afraid of "1984," but they love
"Brave New World." The same morans who decry "gubmint" and don't want to pay more taxes will happily wander through Wal*Mart to spend what little they make on a bunch of crap from China.

Just say no to "1984" but bring it on to "Brave New World"

the picture and cogninant dissonance is delicious!

5. Maybe I'm too cynical these days.
All I see is PR manipulation of a new Wal-Mart money-saving scheme. They're "going green" or they're trying to cut energy costs because of increasing fossil fuel prices? My money's on the latter.

Whatever their motivation, I'm glad they're doing it. However, it does not raise them in my estimation at all -- not until they clean up their horrendous labor and business practices -- and I still will not set foot in their stores.

Btw, they also announced that they'll be using corn-based plastics in their packaging, which also sounds like a very good thing -- until you learn that the plastic will be coming from GM corn and produced by Cargill Dow.

I applaud every effort any company makes toward being more environmentally responsible, but I loathe manipulative greenwashing PR.

7. Agreed
They're taking advantage of all the hurricanes and the building public belief that maybe it does have something to do with global warming.

Who's going to police Walmart's new environmental attitude?
