What does "ONE" indictment mean??? (from Dailykos)
Like everyone, I was pretty disappointed when I first saw the Raw Story piece about "one indictment" submitted and "at least" 2 will be sought. That and the clear impression that whatever was brought would center on perjury. My heart sank. Last November all over. The wording didn't seem right though, with everything we've been hearing about how deep Fitz has drilled down. Then I remembered having read the Larry Franklin indictment in the AIPAC case so I went back and found it. It's described as "an indictment" and is titled "Superceding Indictment" (singular, see?) But it's 26 pages, includes 5 counts and 3 defendants. Just one document, one "indictment" but there's a whole lot of fun going on there.

1. Well someone talking to Franken this morning was reminding us...
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 02:52 PM by calipendence
that Fitzgerald has had a *very* tight leash on his people and the GJ, and that any leaks that have come out so far have likely been from attorneys of those being talked to, who might be interested in spreading disinformation on the case. Basically he noted what we've been hearing so far may be a "best case" scenario of what's likely to come down for the Republicans, if most of these leaks are coming from defendants' lawyers.

My guess is that Fitzgerald is telling all of his people that if there are any leaks, that it would completely destroy the ethical values of the case he's trying to prosecute, and some hinted that he might even try to prosecute THEM for leaks as well if they were to leak info themselves.

I think Fitzgerald knows that he has to play this by the book, or the Rethugs, which control almost every other arm of government will try to use any mistakes to weasel out of any charges. I wouldn't get overly concerned yet until we hear the the official charges.

12. You make an excellent point
The word on Fitzgerald has been that he's run a leak free investigation. Why would it all of a sudden begin to leak like a sieve? I'm in agreement that the leaks are from defendants lawyers and not from within Fitzgerald's camp.

What I took the Raw Story article to mean was that someone expects to be brought up on perjury charges. No surprise there. However, that doesn't mean that the only charges that Fitzgerald is seeking.

14. DeLay's indictment has three people.
We should remember that!

16. The implications of this are most intriguing.
An entire conspiracy can be contained in one indictment.

We shall see...

18. Fitz is used to dealing with mobsters, so he knows how to
finesse this whole thing. Any leaks out of his organization per se would be calculated. - K

11. I have no problems with RawStory
They are reporting what they find out. Some of their stuff has been right on the mark. Some of their stuff has missed the mark, but not by much. It depends on their source for this info, who is not likely a person who wants there to be indictments. So, the source low-balls it and RawStory reports it. No big deal.

I take the attitude that this new info is probably partially accurate, but that they probably do not have the whole story.

Read the post above about what was said on Franken's program.

Keep the faith.

17. several journalists from Rawstory post here regularly
I remember that they did many fine articles on the Downing Street Memos when those came out. Having said that, Fitzgerald runs a tight ship, and I won't believe anything until I hear it from his mouth. I have heard reports of anywhere from 1 to 22 indictments in the last week. So let's just all keep our pants on until its really real.

3. Exactly, thanks for posting this
In reality, we will just have to wait this out and see what actually transpires. One indictment, as in the AIPAC case, can be all-encompassing.

7. I think that's got to include Cheney too though!
Cheney in charge would have me scared and thinking of moving to Canada. Don't think that this is the way it will go down though.

9. LOL, imo, Cheney HAS BEEN in charge, this would just make it
official. I am torn between hoping Fitzgerald doesn't request and extension and we will know what he has very soon and yet, if an extension is needed, I am sure he will ask for one and that, too, would be a good thing.
